When we wanted to get a gift for some extended family in Buffalo New York, the first thing we did was hit Google to see what was available in the area. Recently, one of our affiliates had gotten in touch with her Dad, who she has not seen in 8 years. She was looking for the perfect gift where she could create a great Christmas memory for her loved ones. After about 10 minutes, we kept reading great things about this restaurant called "Olivers" in Buffalo New York. So we called, and the phone courtesy and arrangements by Chris was just as good as their website face. Yes! I was many States away and it just may work out perfect!
And it did. We just got the call today of how wonderful a place Olivers really was. They said the food, drinks, music, and atmosphere was superb. They bragged about many things at Olivers, but the best compliment we got out of it was "Everything was Great!". That is exactly what we needed to hear. They told us that it was the best Christmas gift they have gotten in a long time. Thank you Oliver's for making dinner and the whole evening great. We will definitely stop by some time in the future to see this great place on our own. www.OliversCuisine.com

Winds in Asheville hitting hard
Many Asheville and Buncombe County residents are without power and internet at the moment as high winds have crept up on the area knocking down trees and damaging several properties. Workers from several utility companies are now on dispatch and working to make the necessary repairs to revive power in some parts of Asheville.

Broadway & Merrimon Connector in Asheville

When cruising around downtown Asheville, Broadway Avenue turns into Merrimon Avenue when heading North. Here is the intersection where I-240 runs through Broadway Avenue. Businesses have it somewhat hard here because there is not much foot traffic on this side of the street. There is a guitar shop, the rear entrance to Broadway's bar and pool hall, the entrance to Rosetta's Kitchen, and the Asheville Mural Project below under the highway.

Wyndham Resorts, not too good
I have to blog on this... finally... after months of frustration, forgetting about it, and hoping for a better vacation next year. Every year, thousands of people from Asheville & Western North Carolina vacation at Wyndham Resorts and have good and bad experiences. Ask Asheville went to Cypress Palms this past summmer, and spent most of the time trying to get comfortable in the place. The internet, that you had to pay additional for, would work for several minutes, click off, and we would spend another 30 minutes trying to reconnect. The staff said they were having problems, but other people at the resort said it has always been bad.
One of the things that amazed me is that when we brought anything to their attention, they quickly bragged on the "other two" places in and around Orlando. One was only 5 minutes away, but you could not use the amenities that they had. So our overall rating of Wyndham's Cypress Palms is a 5 on a scale of 1 - 10. Of course simple little things could be done like getting new sheets that could actually fit the beds, or using new microwaves that work instead of the leftovers from the "better" resorts. We were evauating 3 condo suites in which us or our friends occupied, so we did not unfairly judge by only using one.
Here are some other items:
1. No sheets for pullout couches, 2. Ceiling fan lighting old and inadequate, 3. DVD player not working in one room, 4. Stove burner problems in 2 out of 3 rooms, 5. Had to call front desk at least 3 times to make something happen, 6. Doors into other suites to the side were unlocked in 2 of the 3 rooms, 7. Showers did not have any grips so child fell pretty hard 3 times, 8. Lobby, elevators, and reception personnel were great, especially Beverly.

Asheville's Buddha Lounge, Internet Cafe, Bookstore, & Great Food!
Buddha Bagels, which recently changed names and owners from New York Bagels is better than ever before. You can order your lunch which is made usually of premium "Boars Head" meats and cheeses, visit Mystic Journeys through an inside entrance and find some inspiration, options, and direction while your sandwich is being custom built. My favorite is "The Monster" sub wth Muenster cheese.
But the lounge is really cool. I asked one of the owners for details and he mentioned the free wifi, getting some bands on the weekends, great seating, and awesome people! Very nice work guys! Thanks you for making a hot spot on Merrimon Avenue in Asheville North Carolina.
Hours are Fri & Sat till 11pm, other days till 10pm. Opens at 7am every morn. Breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, snack, quick bite... and with these hours... a great place to grab my midnight snack on the way home, lol.

A Christmas Wish.....
Regal, Carmike, EPIC, and Beaucatcher. To you, I beg this favor. I REEEEEEEEALLY wanna see "The Wrestler" starring Mickey Rourke. It's out now in limited release, and it's directed by Darren Aronofsky. Apparently, it's pretty awesome. Mickey Rourke made his first threat of a comeback when Sin City came out, but he has seemingly kicked down the door with this flick and I personally....am glad he's back :)

Asheville... Watch Your Vehicles
From the Asheville Citizen Times: ASHEVILLE – Two men were arrested Sunday on charges of obtaining property under false pretense due to illegally towing vehicles.
The Asheville Police Department set up decoy vehicles that were legally parked, according to police warrants, and they were towed, “claiming the vehicle had not paid, when it fact it had.”
Both men are employed by All Safe Towing, the warrants said. Trevor Kyle Ballinger, 25, of Nebraska Avenue, and Leonard Tobias Best, 32, of Buffalo Street, were both charged and held on bonds of $500 each. ***End of ACT Story***
I wrote a blog a few weeks ago how some tow truck drivers in big cities (and many other places) are being used for car thefts, if there is no other way to get the car. These Asheville guys may have just been illegally accruing charges, and not actually stealing the vehicles. Let's look at some of your security options for a vehicle:
1. The Club - It came out and everyone loved it, until thieves simply started taking a hacksaw, sawing the steering wheel, and removing the club in 30 seconds.
2. The Column Lock - The column lock is great unless the thief has bolt cutters or any type of cordless drill with some type of metal cutting attachment. In that case, the lock is cut and the car is gone.
3. The Alarm System - The old "alarm system" is probably the most popular but there are many ways to disarm. For one, thieves know they could go under your car, reach up and disconnect your siren wire. Then when your doors are open, just the lights start blinking, they pop your hood, disconnect the full alarm system, steal the car, and have a nice security system to sell for a bonus.
Out of everything, the two main ways to steal a vehicle is by towing it or by having the keys. Watch those tow trucks and watch where you leave your keys, and never leave your house keys on the ring with them. (Even at dealerships!). It only takes a few seconds to make a copy of any key and then simply match it with your home address on your "work order". Be careful! If you have been burglarized and there was not any forced entry (and you actually lock your doors), please think of where was the last few places you had left your full set of keys. The culprit should not be too far from there. Don't get all paranoid. Just keep your eyes open a pay attention a little more.
Edmunds also has a list of the "Top 10 Ways to Steal a Car, and How to Prevent it". You can read more on this by clicking HERE.

Hey, TWILIGHT-fans, GUESS WHAT ?!?!?!
You probably have already seen the movie and found this out for yourself, but the TWILIGHT movie SUCKS, so instead, I offer to you an alternative with a near-identical story-line and more "vampiric" vampires to boot. It's called "Let The Right One In" and it's playing at the Regal Hollywood Cinemas RIGHT NOW !!! It's about a little girl and her father who move in next door to a young boy somewhere in Sweden and as soon as they do, dead bodies, drained of their blood, start popping up all over the place. Boy meets girl, they fall in puppy-love, and what follows is one of the sweetest love stories i've ever seen :) If u spiralled into a suicidal depression when the TWILIGHT movie came out, put the gun down and get over to REGAL on Hendersonville rd. right by ZAXBY'S and BOSTON MARKET. Your faith in the world will be restored :)

Asheville Arrest off Merrimon Avenue, Asheville's Worst Street
Saw three APD police cars next to GreenLife off of Merrimon Avenue. This street is the "shortcut" when walking from Merrimon Ave to Broadway Ave. This strip right here used to be one of the worst streets in Asheville. Prostitution on this sidewalk and in the bushes, drugs, robberies, and anything else you can think of. GreenLife grocery came in and produced a lot of traffic, the Asheville Police regularly patrolled, and this block cleaned up. Then on the right, a little behind me, is the new Pioneer Building which is building #1 of the new 5 Points Village that Mr. Kevin Kerr and his inspired team have been planning on for years. Now, the history of this street is exactly that... History. The future of this street is very bright. This place is exploding and every inch will soon be accounted for. At least 6 more nice development spots right around this little village in Downtown Asheville, and that is besides the 5 Points property. www.GreenlifeGrocery.com and www.5PointsVillage.com

Man pleads guilty in July 4th homicide
ASHEVILLE – The man Asheville police arrested this year in the July 4th homicide of another man has today pleaded guilty in Superior Court. Steven Gordon Shultz, birth date 6/16/1960, pleaded guilty to the Second-Degree Murder and Robbery With a Dangerous Weapon of Fredrick Garfield McLeod, birth date 8/21/1975. Shultz received a 12-year minimum sentence. The stabbing happened in the parking lot outside the Beaucatcher Cinemas at 321 New Haw Creek Lane. Mr. McLeod was stabbed multiple times while seated in his vehicle and later died at the hospital. During the course of the investigation, APD detectives discovered that Mr. McLeod was a crack cocaine dealer and that the stabbing took place during a drug sale to Mr. Shultz. At least 17 APD detectives, detective supervisors, and forensic services technicians worked that entire holiday weekend, interviewing more than a dozen people and expending more than 465 man-hours to bring the case to a successful conclusion.

T-Mobile comes to Asheville to battle Verizon and US Cellular
T-Mobile had a nice stronghold in the nearby Greenville South Carolina and have moved some operations to Asheville to join in on the great market after buying SunCom out. Asheville Hallmark in the Asheville Mall
Some talking gift bag. Cashier was trying to sell the last one so she could stop hearing it all day.
Stopped by the Hallmark yesterday to grab a "Baby's First Christmas" tree ornament for some friends, and they only had one more. I grabbed it quickly. Hallmark has almost anything you need when it comes to a quick gift and card. Of course Greeting Cards are their main focus, and those are great memories if used wisely. I love when people put life into their greeting cards. My Aunt used to always write a little paragraph on what I mean to her and why she thought this gift was appropriate. I know, I was spoiled... but you need to use that empty space on those cards and give the ones you love something to read and read again one day if necessary. I know I have several cards that people have given me over the years that help me so much. I read over them and simply remember love, peace, and friendship... and reach out for it once again. www.Hallmark.com Posted by Ask Asheville North Carolina at 8:18 PM 0 comments Links to this post

Asheville has a Church for Teenagers, Trinity Teens
Trinity Teen Church uses the old Trinity Baptist Church Sanctuary which was built by Jerry Payne Construction under the direction of Ralph Sexton Sr.

Years ago, a youth Pastor named Tim Brady created a church in West Asheville designed with teenagers in mind. Trinity Teen Church was formed under Trinity Baptist Church and Dr. Ralph Sexton Jr. The teenagers got heavily involved in the community with outreach projects going on from downtown Asheville to the dangerous housing projects in New York City. The did everything from balloon animals, to puppet shows, to street evangelism, to church events. One of the churches they frequent when they go to NYC on "mission trips" is The Brooklyn Tabernacle led by Pastor Jim Cymbala and The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir.Posted by Ask Asheville North Carolina at 7:21 PM 1 comments Links to this post

Asheville Jewelry at Overstrom Studio
I remember walking into this place and seeing a red pendant on a silver chain and it was beautiful. I immediately told the lady I would take it and she told me "the pendant is $17,000 and the chain is $6000". She then explained that that was a Ruby of rare form and the chain was Platinum. I had $500 to spend, so they pointed me to the normal gold. Very nice selection in here with some crafting and jewelry making going on while I was in there. http://www.overstrom.com/

Night pic of the rotating monument in front of the Asheville Community Theatre in Downtown Asheville North Carolina.
Downtown Asheville is booming and parking can be difficult to find. We have several spaces adjacent to the theatre that are available on a first come, first served basis. The closest street parking is found on Spruce, Walnut and Market streets (meters run until 6:00 pm Monday-Saturday, but are free on Sundays). The closest parking garage is located on Biltmore Avenue, approximately 2 blocks from the theatre."
Asheville Community Theatre will mount several full productions each season in the new intimate performance space, with the intention of building and nurturing a more adventurous audience. Our inaugural production is David Sedaris’ “The Santaland Diaries,” opening November 29, 2002. 35below will offer more affordable ticket prices and later show times, often running multiple performances on the same evening.

Asheville Pizza at Mellow Mushroom
Mellow Mushroom Pizza has been the main pizza establishment in Downtown Asheville for a long time now. I remember trying their "non-traditional" pizza and wondering why pizza has been around for so long and no place I have been to has been so creative. They run a simple operation with a mixed group of clients. When I went to eat there a few weeks ago, they had 3 large groups eating outside, the bar inside to the left was packed, and there were only 4 booths/tables available. Pretty relaxed environment and very enjoyable. Right in the heart of Downtown Asheville on Broadway Ave, just one street away from Pack Square Monument and the BB&T building. www.MellowMushroom.com

Downtown Asheville CVS become a stageshow
Here is a little bit of the Asheville streetlife right across from Pritchard Park and Wachovia Bank in downtown Asheville. CVS has just recently moved out and this store remains vacant with nothing covering the windows. Some musicians are playing in the entryway and some others talking on the side, one dressed as Santa. I have seen people sleeping in this hole, peddling, and much more. It is a free platform and they are quick to make use of it. I wonder if you have to reserve it, is it first come first serve, can you pay someone to use it, or is there a time limit? Maybe it is a "free for all" and you have to fight for the spot? This is Asheville, who knows. These two men were into in, and as I waited for this long light, I watched them jam out together!

Asheville Nightlife at Magnolia's
Magnolia's has been one of the main nightlife scenes in downtown Asheville North Carolina for some time now. We used to go, hang out, eat, and dance at Mag's. Then we would crash Cynjades, hip hop for a few, and afterwards we would wind down back at Magnolia's. I remember on one occasion when I went with a friend to eat at Magnolia's and somehow got drafted as one of the test dummies in this bachlorette party for this nice lady who used to work at Old Europe. I guess one of her "orders" at this party was to pick a man in the building and kiss him. They were about 20 of them and they were having an awesome time. I was embarrased, but could not resist.

***Got this information from http://www.obcgs.com/. Have it as some of my permanent "Great Asheville Info" and wanted to share it.***
Asheville is located at the confluence of the French Broad and Swannanoa Rivers. Buncombe County rests in a central area of a high plateau bordered by the Blue Ridge, Great Craggies and Black Mountains on the east and the Great Smokies chain of the Appalachians on the west. Recorded history began with the visit of Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto to Western North Carolina In 1540. Trade was first established with the Cherokee Indians In 1643. Early trading paths followed established Indian routes which crossed at Asheville's present location. At the time of the revolution, the English had established the limits of colonial expansion westward to the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This assurance of territorial Integrity aligned the Cherokee with the British. Cherokee raids on colonial settlements brought a force of colonists headed by General Griffith Rutherford Into Western North
Carolina In 1776, He destroyed Cherokee villages and broke the power of the nation.
Early settlers were largely Scotch-Irish Immigrants from Ulster in Northern Ireland, where restrictive British tariffs had ruined the wool and weaving industries. Samuel W. Davidson and his family were the first to settle in Buncombe County on Christian Creek In the Swannanoa Valley in 1784. He was later killed by Indians. He is buried on Jones Mountain. A permanent settlement was established there in 1785 in what was then known as 'Eden Land.' In later years Davy Crockett courted and wed Elizabeth Patton, a member of a leading Swannanoa family.
The County of Buncombe was established on December 5. 1791 by an act of the legislature, initiated by William Davidson and Colonel David Vance. A log courthouse was constructed in 1793 at a point which is now Pack Square. A year later John Burton obtained state grants of land for the establishment of a settlement he called Morristown. He laid out 42 half-acre lots which sold for roughly $2.50. Three years later, In 1797, it was incorporated and renamed Asheville In honor of Governor Samuel Ashe.
Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian circuit riders brought religion to the settlers of the Southern Appalachians In the early 1800s. Methodist Bishop Francis Asbury was the most noted of these. In 1840 Asheville's population was 500; to 1860 - 1,100; 1880 - 2,610; 1890 - 10,237; 1900 - 14,694; 1930 - 50,193; 1970 - 57,681. The 1980 U.S. Census showed Asheville's population to be 60,500. and the population of Buncombe County to be 162,000. In 1828 a road following the French Broad River was completed to East Tennessee. With It wagons of settlers moving west began coming through Asheville, while droves from Tennessee and Kentucky moved herds of cattle, sheep, hogs and turkeys through to the population centers of South Carolina.
The town's growth was further stimulated by the completion of the "Asheville and Greenville Plank Road' in 1851. The wealthy and favored began to come ~o Asheville aboard four and six horse stages. The city's reputation as a health resort began to grow. When the War Between the States broke out. Asheville became a major Confederate military center. The Buncombe Rifles, first company organized west of the Blue Ridge, marched forth on April 18, 1861, with a flag made of silk dresses of the belles of the town. Captain Zebulon Vance organized shortly thereafter the Rough and Ready Guards. Of the ten companies of the 6Oth North Carolina Regiment, seven of them were Buncombe County men. An early and flourishing industry was the making of Enfield Rifles, prized by Confederate soldiers for their accuracy.
In 1878, Asheville and Western North Carolina acquired the descriptive phrase "The Land Of The Sky" which derived from a well known book by Mrs. Frances Tiernan of Salisbury, writing under the name of Christian Reid. The nickname quickly caught the attention of thousands and spread Buncombe's fame more widely than ever. When the railroad broke through the Eastern continental divide in 1880, a new era was launched for Asheville and Western North Carolina. Elaborate hotels were built, including the Battery Park In 1889. From its vantage point on "Stoney Hill," George W. Vanderbilt discovered what he described as the most beautiful spot in the world. He purchased 145,000 acres and began building one of the great country houses of the world, Biltmore House. Great religious assemblies were established In the area. A grand opera house was built, and a convention auditorium followed.
In 1900, a newly organized chamber of commerce, the "Asheville Board of Trade," launched national advertising, and proclaimed the city to be one of the "leading convention cities In the country." A new wave of luxury hotel construction began: the Langren in 1912, the unbelievable Grove Park Inn In 1913, the new Kenilworth Inn in 1918 ... and with Battery Park. The break of the land boom, followed by the great depression of the early 1930s brought financial ruin to Asheville, from which It was slow to recover. However, during this period two great natural attractions were in the making: the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway, which were to make the Asheville area the most visited recreational area in the country.
At the present time Asheville enjoys a broadly based economy supported by a thriving travel industry, conventions, widely diversified Industry, forestry and agriculture. In 1980, Buncombe County's industries Include BASF, Square D., Gerber, Ball Corporation, Beacon end Sybron/Taylor. Asheville is the junction point of two Interstate highways, 26 and 40. It is the hub of five federal highways, two Appalachian development highways, five state highways and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Southern Railway serves Asheville. The modern Asheville Airport is served by Piedmont Airlines, plus commuter airlines. The Asheville-Buncombe Consolidated Water District reservoir holds 6 billion gallons, and is centered In a remote timbered watershed covering 24 square miles. Buncombe County was served by a new $10,400.00 sewage disposal system. In 1970, Asheville earned the designation "All American City." A
new Civic Center was completed In early 1974. Asheville's most famous native son is author Thomas Wolfe, whose boyhood home is open to the public as a memorial. Evangelist Billy Graham is Asheville's most world renown citizen. - The Historic News, Feb. 1999
LOL... I have talked to people that really got upset when I told them that "Southern" is not a nationality, but some locals knew their history and family tree for a hundreds of years. Nice! I think... Maybe the older I get, the more interested in history I become? The photo above is by Ben Pierce on Flickr.com.

Skinny Legs and All and WSNB rock the Westville Pub
Last night, the Southern Fried Blues Society sponsored a fundraiser for the bands to help them travel to Memphis, TN in February to attend the International Blues Challenge. WSNB won the local SFBS competition to be in the competition, Skinny Legs and All is the nominated band to attend the Youth Showcase. The Westville Pub was filled with music lovers, friends, and family - and they enjoyed a fantastic show put on by both the bands. The silent auction displayed beautiful art, clothing, and jewelry. Those who donated money to the fund were given raffle tickets and took home t-shirts, Cd's, gift certificates, and even a bucket of Moon Pies! Everyone who came out to support the bands had a great time - and the servers and bartenders at the Westville Pub kept the beer and food flowing. Thanks to Peggy Ratusz and everyone at the Blues Society for planning the event! There will be another fundraiser in January - so keep posted and please come out and see these fantastic bands!

Asheville's Carolina First Bank, brand new downtown!
Carolina First came into the Asheville area and took it by storm, building several large structures in key areas such as here. This is right across the street from the Buncombe County Courthouse in Downtown Asheville North Carolina. As with the other branch on Merrimon Avenue, Jersey Mike's is their second line tenant. www.CarolinaFirst.com Posted by Ask Asheville North Carolina at 12:40 AM 1 comments Links to this post

This lady was wondering "why is this guy filming me?" and then we talked, got some clips, etc. The Salvation Army is everywhere, and I have met a lot of great people donating their time to collect funds to help during the Season. Victoria's Secret in Asheville, something for the ladies (and the men too)
I kind of think this is an awesome idea for the guys to stop by stores like these and invest in something that will benefit the both of you. I know on "According To Jim", he bought his wife a flat screen tv with a sports channel subscription as a gift, and that is a little too inconsiderate. Do not know her size? Go in, pick someone there, and say she about like her size, etc. I have done it plenty of times, lol. Or skip the "clothing", and check out their perfumes, make up, and other bath products that I am sure your significant other would love to try. Great section in there featuring the "Pink" teen and young lady line (or feeling young, lol), another featuring the "Angels" line (pajamas, bras, underwear, pastel colors, soft materials), also the "Very Sexy" line which leans more toward lingerie, sexy clothing, etc, and then "Body By Victoria" which is sportswear and activewear. This store has 6 sections, while the Victoria's Secret at the Biltmore Square Mall has 5. www.victoriassecret.com Posted by Ask Asheville North Carolina at 12:11 AM 0 comments Links to this post

Asheville's Chick-Fil-A, inside the hut
Quick pic of workers in the Chik-Fil-A on Tunnel Road in Asheville North Carolina. This place always looks clean and workers at this establishment have always been great. I believe the same owners have the Chik-Fil-A in the Biltmore Square Mall and also on Hendersonville Road in South Asheville. www.chick-fil-a.com

Asheville Accident on I-240, traffic dead still
This is the scene of the accident on Tuesday under the Westgate overpass going onto I-240 West. This is right in front of Jackson's Trading Post and Sam's Club on Patton Avenue in West Asheville. These workers were halting traffic. This is a weird switch up of traffic at this point and will be a major area of concern as the Asheville area growth continues.

Ross Clothing in Asheville, discount shopping
Ross Clothing in Asheville North Carolina offers some great discount clothing selections. I guess there are 4 main outlet type stores and they are Ross, TJ Maxx, Rugged Wearhouse, and Dillards at the Biltmore Square Mall. These stores sometimes carry some major lines of clothing. Great place if you are on a fixed budget or are just a discount hunter in the Asheville area.
Took this from their website...

Asheville Mall, Tour of the Stores
We went shopping tonight and took some footage as I walked around. The Asheville Mall grows and grows, and is set up pretty nice. (They need to plan on a second story in the future). Many shoppers out, but still found parking pretty easy. Everything was flowing normally tonight, and we have about 8 more days till Christmas day. This was shot at about 5pm so the shopping mania was just about to begin. This was the little calm before the storm. See more Asheville Videos on AskAsheville's Video Channel.

Suicide in Weaverville NC - Sad Death of an Ex-Sergeant
Recenty retired Police Sergeant Andy Cody was found dead the other day in his Mars Hill home. They labeled it as a suicide as of right now but the SBI is doing the full investigation.
Andy Cody was literally under tons of stress as he was just recently arrested for domestic violence with his girlfriend Angela Tweed. After the arrest, he resigned soon after. No charges were filed on her. So Andy fought most of his life to try to uphold the law, got in a scuffle, got into some trouble, and then committed suicide.
This is very sad because people in the "Department" hold each other to high strict standards and any deviation is sometimes over punished. Corruption is something that should not be acceptable... but this is just a "bad situation". Last time I checked, Police Officers were not robots, and they have the same normal pressures and problems any one of us face every day in life... plus all of the stress that comes with the job. Sometimes the attitude you see on Police Officers is built up over a long time of dealing with liars, get-overs, criminal minds, drug addicts, and dangerous people. It is like going to war for 12 hours, changing out of uniform, and then trying to live normal for the few hours in-between shifts. Most of us would live in complete "shell shock".
Another story I think about years ago is a graduate from Trinity Baptist Bible College named Charles Nations of Haywood County. His classmates said he was so excited to have his diploma and to be "officially preaching". His vision was American Evangelism (or working with churches to revive their beliefs and lives). He was speaking at different local churches in Western North Carolina weekly. Charles then committed suicide because of getting "too close" to a woman outside of marriage. He was involved with several churches and friends in the area that would pretty much cut him off for life or "scar" him, and he could not handle the pressure. As far as he could see, he was cut off from everything he knew and loved... and he killed himself. Terrible situation.
Officers... Remember that people are just humans and humans have issues and problems. Also remember that, we the people, do not expect you to be Superman. Stop being so hard on yourselves. There needs to be more undertanding out there! Lives and life is weighing in the balance. We just lost one. Who will be next if we do not reach out to them?

December Night Window Shopping Pics in Asheville NC

I was just walking around Downtown Asheville thinking and taking some video. Grabbed these stills for me, love the season, businesses getting involved, and people being maybe a little more merry (even if they are forced by friends and family). For me, Christmas is not a time to run around like mad, visiting and gifting everyone you can... but it is more of a time where I would like to get the key people in my life a gift, share a dinner or two, and do a lot of reflection. Mix that in with tieing up loose ends and editing and confirming my goals for 2009... and there goes every minute.Let's go into this New Year prepared. Make a List! What things need to be tied up before the year ends? What are your personal, business, social, and financial goals for 2009? How can you be more effective (green) in everything you are doing? Whether it is using your time more wisely or getting rid of things that simply are a waste of time; savor your moments in these coming years. Let you life make a impact where it is most welcome. Make sure you determine a fair, proper balance between work, family, fun, hobbies, etc.

It is all about blogging to us on everything from ideas, photos, area info, local hobbies, local events, local businesses, organizations, churches, clubs... and so on.
There has been some word out lately about "bloggers fatigue" in Asheville. I know how that can be... having a million things to do, and blogging not really paying the bills. Here are some ways to keep a consistent blog of interest up.
1. Do not feel as if you have to write a book. Sometimes I feel like gabbing, and sometimes I just post a photo and a sentence. Use photos! Take one, get one from Picasa or Flickr, or whatever... but add some color and life to that blog text.
2. Do not feel like "you" have to necessarily completely like what you are blogging about. Who made that rule anyway? If your blog is a public blog, then maybe you would want to start and continue talking about other things outside of your "inner circle".
3. Give information when you blog. Tips, ideas, happenings... establish landmark information about your post. Mention names, streets, areas, crossroads, whatever. Not just Asheville, but West Asheville, Patton Ave right in front of Wachovia Bank on the corner of Louisiana Avenue. The more information you give, the more readers have. You are investing information to the world! Link to sites... Websites need backlinks, so if you are blogging... hook them up with a hyperlink and give your readers ease should they wish to click-over. We rather give them the info they are looking for (even if they have to leave), than keep them on "our" site.
4. Dedicate a time every week... and work your way into every day if it fits. Some people put up one blog and die, while others put up about 10 blogs right away and never write again. Schedule 15 minutes a week to write one simple blog. Some of you can do it in 5 minutes. Once you get comfortable and are blogging well, you can up the time to 30 minutes per week or up the number of days per week to 3, 5, or 7... whichever fits for you.

Asheville Hardees in Biltmore Village, matching decor...
I eat at Hardees every once in awhile, and it has to be this one in Asheville North Carolina. This restaurant was designed to compliment the Biltmore Village area below downtown Asheville. I think it was a great effort. If it is something quick they give it to you at the counter, but if it is a meal, most of the time you have to sit down and wait for the "waitress" to bring it to you. This Hardees and the McDonalds about 1000 feet away are a little more of a restaurant instead of a fast food establishment. That is the Grand Bohemian Hotel to the right of this photo (currently under construction). http://www.hardees.com/Posted by Ask Asheville North Carolina at 1:45 PM 0 comments Links to this post

Asheville Web Design, all websites are not created equal
Asheville web design has become a very competitive market. In these mountains, we have computer geniuses everywhere. PaleoSun does not just build websites, they actually take you through a whole process which involves evaulating your visitors habits, what is the main focus you want you client to see, what is the main move you want you client to make, what colors would fit best for your company and also with the times, and future expansion options once the base site is completed. Much more than just "building a website".
All of the code they use is custom hand written for every site and forget about search engine friendly; the search engines love it. I am a marketer, networker, and catalyst... but when I want something completed as far as web design, code, and getting the best website possible... I go to PaleoSun. Oh, yes I have worked with others in the area, did an evaluation at the same time, and one thing or another messed it up. No returned calls, no emails back, cannot comprehend a plan, leaves dead pages on my sites, does not title and tag my pages right, does not make a good site map or one at all... and the list goes on. All of you know what I am talking about whether it is a web designer or a restaurant; they get judged by their service and product. PaleoSun has never let me down. The client, and making a positive impact on their business is their main concern. http://www.paleosun.com/

This was the end of season party and they are going to come into 2009 better than ever. It is a New Year and our confidences will be reassured, our Country will revive, and our whole mindsets and attitudes will reshape for the better. Asheville already has a great vibe, and teams & businesses like these networking together, add to the community reaching for a common positive goal.

Asheville's Hearts With Hands
Years ago, Trinity Baptist Church in West Asheville decided that they needed to do something to assist with Major Disaster Relief. Ralph Sexton Jr. was the person with the initial "burden" and then Dwight Parrish, his son-in-law, got a team together and ran with the plan. Since helping establish Hearts With Hands in Buncombe County Asheville North Carolina, Dwight has also been a dedicated Missionary in several other Countries. Talked to some of the Church members and it is like "Everyone Loves Dwight", lol. I guess he one of their heros... in the flesh as least.

Asheville Salvation Army collecting at The Mast General Store
Quick pick of a great Santa salesperson for the Salvation Army. I watch his interaction for about 4 minutes and he was very jolly! Some businesses in Asheville allow the Salvation Army to collect money outside. We have also see them in front of Ingles Grocery stores a lot, so Bob does some there. Thanks. About 2 years ago, Wal-Mart had kicked the Salvation Army away from their store, but after much heat, they sent out a hardy welcome, lol. To read Wal-Marts positive press release when they re-allowed the SA, click HERE. Haha, they knew to back off.
The Mast General Store is a wonderful stop in Downtown Asheville. On the main level, you will find a lot of clothing for men, women, and children. You will also find a "candy corner" a "nic-nac corner", and lots of other things to keep your interest for awhile. When you head downstairs, there is an awesome shoe shop, more clothing, hiking gear, back packs, hats, and more. I really enjoy walking around this store. www.mastgeneralstore.com/ and www.salvationarmyusa.org

What if it were you sir... Oh it is! (trouble in Polk County)
This is so entertaining, it is like a play... and I need some popcorn with extra butter. Do you want to see justice? Just take the Sheriff out of the picture and put any one of us in his position right now, and he himself would throw the book at us. We would die in jail. "Such a good guy, such a nice man" is what I am hearing. Tell that to the 2 little girls he pinned down, or make it even more personal and let's just say for a minute that it was your 2 girls, and you couldn't do anything about it without getting cut off from your community. "It was 20 years ago", they say. Well... some little girl has been waiting for 20 years to get closure on this situation, and the time has obviously arrived. Are not these the same people who enforce "reaping what you sow". Okay, so be a man and reap it. You did back then, and this is what happens.
Partiality is a word that comes to mind. Whether on the side of the community backing him, or on the side of the Asheville Citizen Times newspaper leaning toward sympathy, and not balance. Where are the girls talking about what he did to their lives? Just like AshVegas implied recently, you are kissing way too much butt to be a reliable, trustworthy news source. Ashevillians are not slow and we do not "just go with the flow". We will call you out! He even got props saying that he is not running for re-election if he is cleared. Oh, so if they let you ride free, you will not run for Sheriff, thanks, lol. I guess the first jury breach did not work so now we are desperate. Read this story... and you may want to play the violin while reading it. I don't care, play the song. I refuse to dance
Asheville Citizen Times story... "MILL SPRING – Polk County Sheriff Chris Abril addressed about 50 supporters this afternoon, telling them controversy surrounding his upcoming rape trial had taken too much time away from his job and away from his family. Those factors motivated him to submit his resignation Thursday, Abril said. The resignation takes effect Sunday."The ongoing negative and controversial social climate surrounding my service as sheriff have had a profound impact on my family, the employees at the Polk County Sheriff's Office, and our community," Abril stated in the letter given to county Board of Commissioners Chairman Tommy Melton and county attorney Tom Hix. Abril's attorney, Stephen Lindsay of Asheville, urged supporters to write letters to the judge who will oversee the sheriff's trial and attend if they can. In the gathering this afternoon, Abril, 45, offered handshakes and exchanged hugs at the Mill Spring Fire Department.
"He is a fine upstanding man. I can't find words to describe what kind of person he is," supporter Barbara Dempsey said. "This is a sad day for Polk County,"Abril said he would assist the next sheriff in making a smooth transition. Authorities charged Abril in 2006, with five counts of first-degree statutory rape and one count of first-degree sexual offense shortly before he was elected sheriff. The charges stem from allegations involving a 10-year-old girl and a 12-year-old girl and the crimes are alleged to have happened 20 years ago.The trial had started in August in Polk County, but a judge ordered a change of venue after prosecutors said Abril had contact with two potential jurors. Lindsay said the sheriff would not seek election again if he were cleared of the charges." ***End of their story
I kind of feel bad for the Judge because people like this expect the people "on their side" to have their back even when they do wrong. Thank you to Judges that refuse to be swayed.

Asheville's Texas Roadhouse, Restaurant & Great Entertainment (check out the dancing!)
Asheville has plenty of restaurants and food options, but none is as fun as this one is sometimes. Here is some nice footage of the Texas Roadhouse on Hendersonville Road in Asheville North Carolina (a stones throw from Biltmore Village). You can tell the vibe of the people behind the scenes by the way the restaurant is run and the tone they pass on and keep alive. A bunch of friendly comfortable staff that does not even look for a minute like they need to be there. I love it. Bartender (Kristie) was very cool, inviting, and pro... so 100% there (and I did not even have a drink)... Bam! But the dancing in this video is very entertaining. The waitress with the antlers was trying to sell those Texas Roadhouse gift cards like mad. Nice pitch. Thanks. I will be back. www.TexasRoadhouse.com

Wow.....all prospective parents should see this....
It's a movie called "Joshua". It came out last year and it stars Sam Rockwell. It's about an intellectually gifted young boy and the surprising number of psychoses that develop within him when his baby sister is born. It starts out, the portrait of an idyllic metropolitan family in New York City and it's build-up is slow, but the payoff is worth it.
WARNING: Not for those who require happy endings to be completely satisfied with a movie. I really would like to be a parent one day, but I sincerely hope that my kid doesn't pull any kinda crazy shit like this one does. I've seen a whole pants-load of other "demon-seed" movies like "The Good Son" and "The Omen" and what-not but this kid is LEGITIMATELY scary. I'm telling ya. See it.

Asheville's Grand Bohemian Hotel in Biltmore Village
Now this is making Big City use of some small space. I noticed when the shell was going up, it was most likely built so that it could eventually add levels to the top if needed. The Grand Bohemian Hotel is right between Hardees and McDonalds in the Biltmore Village area of Asheville North Carolina. Hardees and McDonalds have both been customized to compliment the Biltmore area and look more like the "stores and shopscape" in the Village. Bohemian also has the little corner right across the street, where Pedro's Porch Mexican restaurant used to be on the corner of Biltmore Avenue and Sweeten Creek. Watching this area develop into such a close knit place is a developer's dream. Many great shops already there, and a few more surprises coming soon. www.BohemianHotelAsheville.com

Will the IWANNA survive Craigslist? (print vs. online in Asheville)
Iwanna better have a serious marketing team going over their strategy and future plans. I used to get an Iwanna every Tuesday, but have not gotten one in several months, except one time for a friend that did not have a computer, lol.

Asheville Emergency, APD, AFD, and Buncombe EMS respond
When danger approached today on Merrimon Ave, the Asheville Police Department, the Asheville Fire Department, and Buncombe County EMS networked together to help. Their selfless job is to keep us safe, help us when we are in trouble, enforce order and law, and risk their lives to save us if necessary. So they definitely make the City of Asheville so much of a safer place. I know most of us are not equipped to respond to an emergency or spontaneous situation, but we have honorable servants everywhere with 1000's of hours of training, ready to come to the rescue. I see these people at work, and I think "that could just as easily be me or someone that I love" laying on the floor needing assistance. Do yourself some good during these times and reach out to your local fire department, police, and area rescue teams with some thankfulness. They are way underappreciated and could use some community interaction from the residents, maybe even dinner one evening, or some fresh baked cookies, lol. Maybe some of the businesses should offer a "Public Servant Discount" to these people who contribute daily to many of our lives. They live their lives to protect mine and yours. Thank you to all of the agencies around the world, especially right here in Asheville NC and Buncombe County (I live here).

Asheville Verizon Wireless, area leader?
Verizon definitely has the complete Asheville North Carolina area covered. I have never actually seen "my network gang" following me around, but I know they are there, lol. I remember when I had Sun-Com with their $70 per month deal for unlimited. That was great until I stepped out of Asheville for a few days and got a $1200 bill for one month. Yes, I freaked... and then calmly drove 100 mph to the nearest Verizon Wireless store. Not to say everything has been perfect, but they are running a 90% success rate with me and that is awesome.
Their team over there on Tunnel Road works together like clockwork. I watch them, see their body language, feel their attitude... haha... but that is just me. I constantly evaluate businesses, see the pros and cons, and re-invent them slightly or extremely, whichever is needed... and sometimes the business does not even know it. I am optimistic; meaning I focus on the strengths, get rid of tradition, bring a business up to date, and then make it all cycle together effectively. Sometimes I ask myself "is this certain business blind"? But then again marketing is not everyone's forte. Sorry for the tangent. Not looking for work at all. I market what I personally prove and believe in.
Verizon cell phone coverage in Western North Carolina has been more than accomodating. When some of my friends have mountain get-togethers (not like that), picnics, hikes, etc... everyone is always looking at their bars, hoping they "stay in range". Call me prideful, but I don't even glance... I just somehow know I am covered. Bam! http://www.verizonwireless.com/

Asheville Insurance by Math, great people and service, definitely
Asheville Insurance is a competitive market these days, and Math Insurance is keeping up with the rates, but really knocking the competition out as far as service. I personally use them for my insurance needs and I know plenty of others that do as well. Greg Spicer can assist you with any type of insurance policy you need, and the service just naturally comes along with the job. Usually insurance offices and agencies are kind of dim and down... but not here. Their team works together to make sure every little question is answered and you walk out of there feeling safe and secure. Then there is Jim The Construction Master over there, so if you have anything to do with Contracting, Subcontracting, or Construction... you need to get this guy on your side. He is the Construction Insurance Guru of Asheville North Carolina. He will make sure every area of concern is covered, show you some ways to get discounts, and keep you stay up to date on all safety issues. I know several companies that he has helped tremendously. You can call them at 828-252-0238 or just go to http://www.mathinsurance.com/.

Google puts Asheville on the Map
This is taken from the Mountain Express:
(This is awesome you should check it out)
Google Inc.’s effort to put 360-degree, street-level views of Asheville on the Web appears to be complete. The views of the city now appear on Google Street View, the California company’s effort to provide computer users with the up-close views of city streets and neighborhoods.
In April, Asheville residents noticed several small sedans zipping around town, each with a short pole and camera mounted to its top. The cars were traversing the city, recording the panoramic views now available online. A Google spokeswoman told Mountain Xpress that the company, which already has views of other North Carolina cities such as Durham and Chapel Hill available, was moving into smaller regions.
Some people have complained that the effort by Google, which also offers Google Earth maps using satellite imagery, is an invasion of privacy. Google, which says its trying to provide useful information to users, says it’s sensitive to privacy concerns and sticks to public roads for the Street View mapping. There’s also a procedure in place to allow people to request that specific views be taken down.
The Street View mapping isn’t perfect. The maps don’t cover 100 percent of city streets, and typing in an address won’t always bring up the exact spot on the street. But overall, the effort offers users trying to navigate Asheville a powerful new tool. Google also allows users to embed it’s maps into Web sites.

What a great opportunity to bring a smile to a child's face this Christmas Season. One of the hardest Christmas seasons financially I have seen in a long time. Obama, Biden, and Gore... not time to play
Tuesday, December 9, 2008 04:23pm EST / Posted by Dave Rochelson on the Change.gov blog.
"All three of us are in agreement that the time for delay is over, the time for denial is over," President-elect Barack Obama said today, following a meeting with former Vice President Al Gore and Vice President-elect Joe Biden.
The three met at the Transition's Chicago headquarters to discuss energy and climate policy -- and how addressing those issues can drive the nation's economic recovery.
"This is a matter of urgency and national security...[but] it is not only a problem, it is also an opportunity," President-elect Obama said. "We have the opportunity now to create jobs all across this country in all 50 states to repower America, to redesign how we use energy and think about how we are increasing efficiency to make our economy stronger, make us more safe, reduce our dependence on foreign oil and make us competitive for decades to come -- even as we save the planet."

Asheville's Future Starts Here, simple development
The video is about construction going on below the Hillcrest Apartments in Asheville North Carolina. They are replacing a section of pipe... most likely a water line. But, I would like to talk a little on the area if you don't mind. This lower part of AVL, between Downtown, North, and West Asheville has several businesses including Grainger straight ahead, Southern States on the left here, several auto parts yards, several auto parts and repair places, and soon the Rivers Condos will be up less than a mile ahead from this point. The Richmond Hill Inn is also only one minute ahead and to the left. This is one section of real estate that will see a drastic improvement in 2009. All along the French Broad River is going to be beautiful and "Green". UNCA only 4 minutes from here. Such a great versatile central location.
Anyway... the market is the only thing that slowed Asheville down for a minute, but come Spring, people are going to start making some extra large moves. The whole economy may not pick up as quickly as here, but Investors and Planners are on the scene and Asheville is a great investment with so much future potential when you incorporate WNC. While others slept... lol. Asheville is creeping elegantly upon the National and Worldwide circuit, not too fast or slow, but kinda just right... if you know and see what I mean. Even McCafe and McDonalds plans in Asheville were not "officially" disclosed. They are staying low key in preparation for the new wave, and trying to sneak in ahead of the competition. They will be the bright new, new look, new feel restaurant on the circuit. Days Inn is using this down market time to re-invent their look and maybe some other things. People are planning and thinking... much of it is about Asheville North Carolina. What have you been thinking about lately?

Savoy Restaurant in Asheville, no more... lunch
Dear Friends,
There’s a lot that I love about running Savoy, but one of the things that has always brought me the most pleasure is serving lunch. There’s something particularly rewarding about welcoming people in the middle of their busy day and giving them a chance to slow down, relax, laugh, maybe conduct a little business, all over a plate of great food and a glass of wine. But you know what they say about all good things...
These are tough times, and my midday business has slowed to the point that I can no longer justify the cost. As much as it pains me, as of December 15 Savoy will no longer serve lunch. Maybe Spring will bring better days. I hope so. Until then, I still think our dinner menu is the best in town, and I know Savoy will continue to be a favorite neighborhood place to end your day. I look forward to seeing you here soon. http://www.savoyasheville.com/

GoForth Won, but Purdue won 33% @ 38 cents a pop!

Paul Purdue wishes to congratulate his opponent, Representative Bruce Goforth on a hard fought campaign. Given the tremendous surge for Democrats now controlling every aspect of life in Buncombe County and apparently our nation, he is pleased to have garnered as many votes as he did. He feels this demonstrates the underlying validity of his positions.
Paul Purdue thanks all the people who came forward to vote for him, or who donated ten dollars or some time to help him mount this effort. This was one of the most economical campaigns ever run in North Carolina.
Paul spent less than $5000 total compared to the $250,000 his opponent amassed and walked away with 33% of the vote. This should encourage others to come forward and run for office, demonstrating that good ideas and a pleasant presentation CAN have good effect.
When you compare raw numbers, our opponent had resources to spend nearly TEN DOLLARS ($10) per vote cast in his favor. We spent around 38 cents per vote which we feel for a seat that pays $20,000 per year is a legitimate amount.
Paul Purdue is grateful to his family, friends and supporters. He will cherish every vote as an affirmation that his ideas and manner were acceptable to many of his neighbors. He looks forward to seeing you around town.
And Paul's volunteers will also be watching to make sure those who have been entrusted with representing the families of this district concentrate on representing our needs and NOT on raising vast amounts of cash for themselves.

Good Tuesday Morning!
I sit in my plush cushy chair early this Tuesday morning all the while trying to get my eight year old daughter up so she can get ready for school. The week has only begun and I'm ready for Friday already! Last night was a lot of fun though. I love watching the joy on her face as she runs to hand out candy canes in the Waynesville Christmas Parade. I don't have any pictures because I forgot my camera, but I was so busy keeping up with Girl Scouts I would have had no chance to take any. The parade was at least twice as large as it was last year. It was a hit. It was changed to night and I truly feel that made a huge difference.
Have a blessed Tuesday!

Days Inn Changes Asheville Signs / Logos, everywhere soon
Here is a video of the sign at the North Asheville Days Inn on Reynolds Mountain being swapped out for something with a little more flare to it. Now we can see the light at the end of the tunnel just a little better. Companies like Days Inn are changing their look to match the times, adapt to simple feng-shui, and re-invent themselves in this new age we are living in. Out with the old business philosophy, and in with the new. Out with the old way to run a Country, and in with the new hi-tech way. Wireless Internet is more important than a hot tub, and colors change how people see you at certain times. (Man their are so many variables with true marketing). With these "old" colors (somebody please tell the last of the Shoney's in the area... does Gary Lowe still own those?), you are identified with the past age, even if it is only 5 years ago. New is for everyone, older people or younger. Just like we keep up with the news, we must follow the times. Popular colors change with time, and a logo can always change meaning and express different or new ideas with age. Some of these expressions may not be good for the time, and that is where "Change" comes in. Here is the Days Inn chain taking some steps.
Crawford Sign Company and Imoco Crane was setting the signs on this Days Inn today.

Phase 2 and 3 of the "new" AskAsheville website got pushed off because of priorities, but it is coming, stronger than ever, and with people from all over the world behind it. We look forward to others improving their Asheville sites too in response to this little leak. We try to provide all information, whether somebody pays for a link or not, whether we like the company or not, whether they recip with us or not. We sometimes ask for reciprocals, and that is somewhat of a test to see the networking minds of other companies in the Asheville area. We want Asheville information to be open source, without bias (or with so much bias from so many you cannot even tell, lol), and a community where people can contribute if they want, promote their business if they want, promote Asheville, and be a part of a new Asheville Info era. We follow Google's model in that anything we can find to give you for free to help you and your business, we will attempt to make you aware and implement it. Become a part of Asheville. Join in with us on AskAsheville.com

Asheville Home Builders, Construction, Realty, Subcontractors... Pay Attention!
Find more photos like this on Asheville Construction and Home Building
Wanted to share this photo slideshow of the site that Asheville Contractors and Subcontractors has put up. They are not the "Asheville Home Builders Association" but many members have made a wise decision by choosing to promo themselves on this website that is alive. It is weird how people struggle, get a website up, and it does them no good. Their are so many other things than just "having a website". Code, content, tags, titles and thousands of other things you can do to make your site rise and be recognized. No, it is not $49.95 to submit your site to thousands of search engines because you have to be very careful with that too.
If you are in Construction, Home Building, or Real Estate in Asheville North Carolina... Check out this new site that allows you the freedom to Create Your Own Webpage with a few quick clicks, add links to your main website or sites if you have some, and keep updated information about you and your company in front of the public at all times. All this is free. They have their blog fed, so anything you post goes around the world in like 30 minutes or less (just like our site), and it is just such a great "Open Information Network" here in Asheville North Carolina. Construction will never be the same!
From what I have heard, Asheville Framing and Asheville Custom Home Builders were putting the site together for some co-op marketing, and they decided to pass it to ABandRE to open it up to everyone. Love the attitude!

Asheville's Skinny Legs and All CD Release!
Colin, Paul, Patrick, Jesse, & Avi
What a day! Skinny Legs and All's first CD - Get the Skinny - arrived. How exciting! The band members along with Ellen and Jonas came over to my house and we all sat down at the dining room table to eat Circle in the Square pizza - our favorite! Then we started an assembly line to package the CDs. Paul - the Keyboardist - and Patricks mom Naiya did all of the CD graphics. Avi drew the "skinny Legs" on the cover. What an amazing group of talented kids! View more on Skinny Legs and All by clicking Here!

Biltmore Village Asheville NC Fun!
Biltmore Village is a great place a minute or two South of Downtown Asheville. There are so many little shops and eateries and new places are under development right now. Found the Elves today, but could not find Santa for some reason, lol. We know he is busy too, so we found plenty more to do. Here are some clips I took while walking through.

Asheville, Hendersonville Red Cross Needs Our Blood, have any you can spare?

HENDERSONVILLE – During the busy holiday season, giving blood is not high on the to-do list. Other reasons for the slowdown in blood collections are people taking time off work and not being in their routines. Also, cold and flu season sets in.
After Thanksgiving, blood collectors must go into high gear to stock up for the toughest sustained period of the year: mid-December to mid-January.
Beth Golden, director of blood services for the Henderson County Chapter, American Red Cross, said people should consider giving blood to be one of their gifts to give this year.
With one pint of blood, potentially three lives are saved.
Ten blood drives will occur in December in Henderson County, with the largest drive at Grace Lutheran Church from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Dec. 30.
Donors can sign-up online at www.membersforlife.org/cbsr (code # 6304) or by calling 693-5605. The chapter drive, A Holiday Celebration, will be 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Dec. 15. Call 693-5605 to schedule a donation appointment.
Information on the other blood drives can be found at www.hcredcross.org, by calling 693-5605 or by stopping at the chapter offices at 203 Second Avenue E., Hendersonville.
Donors must be at least 17 years of age, or 16 with parent/guardian permission, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, be in general good health; and must present a valid photo ID.

Third Day!
I went to one of the best, most rockin' concerts I have been to Thursday night! It was a Christian concert. Third Day played and they rock. They've been together since the nineties and kind of have that alternative sound. My heart beat with the excitement, the strength of the words in the music. There is so much more to Christian music than many think. I know less than a year ago I never thought I would be into it. I rocked out Thursday night!
Check them out! http://www.thirdday.com/
Have a most blessed Saturday!

Pizza in Asheville with Lots of Entertainment

The Asheville Pizza Company is one of our favorite stops. Watch a movie, play games or chill on the lower level, hang at the bar, and eat with the fam. Here is a quick pic of the bar. The lady behind the counter was great to deal with and everything was working together perfectly. Efficiency and production. Thank you. http://www.ashevillepizza.com/Posted by Ask Asheville North Carolina at 8:57 PM 0 comments Links to this post

Asheville Mural Project YMI Cultural Center benefit dinner

Not sure if some of you knew, but I've been involved in the AMP(Asheville Mural Project) under the 240 overpass at Lexington Avenue
in downtown Asheville....
The project was started about... over?... 2 years ago with design...then approval by the city and DOT... We are 3/4 of the way complete with the mural project. On the west side of Lexington, Kurt Thaesler and I have completed 1/2 of the mural, but our $ has run out. We'll be fundraising in hopes to get the other 1/2 done this spring. Hope this finds you well.
Peace, Steve Lister.

Banquet Dec 20th

(Asheville, NC) Assist The Asheville Mural Project (AMP) in
fulfilling the dream of creating more community-made public art,
creating new spaces, and revitalizing old by attending the AMP's Silent Art Auction and Banquet on December 20th at the YMI Cultural Center, on the corner of Eagle and Market Streets downtown. This will be a seated banquet dinner from 7pm until 10pm. There will be music, a silent art auction, live painting and auction, cultural arts speakers and a slide show on the creative culture in Asheville, focusing on the mural project. Be sure to get your tickets early as there is limited seating; tickets are $35.
Supporting the arts by attending this banquet also means getting a taste of some of the finest food that Asheville Culinary Artists have to offer. This buffet-style dinner consists of food contributed from over 15 of the areas finest independent restaurants, including Table, Mela, Bouchon, Heiwa, Zambra, the Marketplace, Salsas, The Lobster Trap, Jerusalem Garden, Early Girl, Thai Basil, the New French Bar, MoDaddy's, Laurey's Gourmet Catering, Barleys, Doc Cheys, amongst others.
Entertainment for the evening includes classical guitar, members of the Asheville High School Choir, as well as other local music acts. Mingle about as you bid on the art donated to the silent auction by local artists. Four AMP Artists will also be painting live on stage
throughout the evening and will auction of the finished pieces. There will also be guest speakers and a slideshow presentation about the history of murals, as well as cultural and community development of murals. Guest speakers will give a narrative about the importance of grassroots arts in Asheville and how art can be used a positive force in every-day experience. Speakers include AMP Director Molly Must, AMP Artist Dan Beck, Arts2People's Executive Director Kitty Love and others to be determined.
This banquet is a fundraiser for the completion of the Lexington
Gateway Mural, located on the support pillars of the I240 overpass
marking the Northern Corridor into downtown Asheville. Moneys raised
will go to support AMP artists and buying the remaining necessary
materials, including the high cost of scaffolding, to complete this
cultural heritage mural. After having raised $10-15k for the
implementation of this project, an additional $10,000-15,000 is needed to complete this mural, including the painting of the Merrimon Ave side of the support pillars.
Any extra funds raised will go towards several of AMP's newest
potential mural sites, including the Asheville Public Library, the
Asheville Transit Center (bus station downtown), and the Montford Corner Store; and to pay staff to sustain the program, write grants, and other administrative details. Help AMP fulfill the dream of creating more community-made public art, creating new spaces and
revitalizing old. Private Donations are always welcome.
If all goes well, AMP will begin painting again on the Lexington Gateway Mural as soon as it gets warm enough in the spring, and will simultaneously begin coordinating the Montford Corner Store Mural (under the direction of Dan Beck).
The Asheville Mural Project, a branch of Arts 2 People, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, exists to beautify and diversify Asheville's urban landscape, providing artists and local community members with the opportunity to design and implement their own public art. AMP believes that murals enhance quality of life and create artful metropolitan experience through the transformation of conventional architecture. AMP's murals are both the testimony and celebration of a lively local arts culture.
Arts 2 People also houses the Lexington Ave. Arts and Fun Festival (LAAFF), the REACH Programming series, the new Pritchard Park Cultural Arts Program, Moving Women, the Faces of Asheville and more. LAAFF has played in integral role in the fundraising and awareness raising efforts to support AMP for the past six years; we are all excited to see this vision turn into reality. Arts 2 People is devoted to promoting the role of the arts as an integral part of our culture by serving the entire community through arts outreach, bringing the arts to those in need of the healing power of art, supporting the careers of artists, and through community cultural development. Asheville Arts For Life & WNC Magazine

Annie Rogers, Program Director Arts For Life AshevilleFor the second year in a row, WNC Magazine has sponsored a tree in the Asheville Airport Holiday Tree contest for Arts for Life, an amazing organization that provides art classes and other creative activities for children and young adults battling cancer and other life threatening illnesses. We won the People's Choice Award last year which awarded Arts for Life a cash prize- - and we ask that you help us do it again this year! If you have never heard of Arts for Life I encourage you to take a few moments to visit their website and see some of the amazing works produced by these courageous kids. http://aflnc.org/gallery/2008/summer/gallery.html. The kids hand folded and decorated dozens upon dozens of paper stars especially for our tree which we now call our "Wishing on a Star" tree. Please scroll all the way down, cast your vote, and help spread the word! http://www.flyavl.com/announcements/holiday-tree-contest.html Thank you, WNC Magazine & Arts for Life
