New Public Relations Director @ Asheville Arts Center

The Asheville Arts Center welcomes their new Director of Public Relations!

The Asheville Arts Center welcomes Michael Wilson to the Arts Center family as the new Director of Public Relations! Brought in about a month ago, Michael has already been working diligently to further the Arts Center's current marketing strategies and dreaming up new, innovative programs with a strong community focus. His grand vision is strongly tied to the notion that the Asheville Arts Center is a major resource for performing arts education in our community. The key to success is supporting the community that supports the Arts Center.

Michael Wilson has two talents: performing and marketing. His first experience with the Asheville Arts Center was this past Spring, playing the title role, Tommy/Narrator, in "The Who's Tommy." While rehearsing the show, through several conversations with the owners of the Arts Center, Michael was offered the opportunity to combine his two talents. Needless to say, this is a dream come true. He jumped right in.

While this is Michael's first full-time job in the performing arts, he has been doing sales & marketing since he was a teenager. Raised by the general manager of a high-volume wine shop in suburban Massachusetts, Michael spent his childhood surrounded by salesmen, including his father. From an early age, he began to see the differences between high- and low-pressure sales tactics and was introduced to the language of sales through his formative years. From the onset, Michael had a clear vision that truly successful salesmen are honest and full of integrity. Having done sales & marketing for over 16 years, he has been very successful in selling a diverse range of products, including natural, specialty & organic foods, high-end kitchen wares, wine, niche online/print advertising and promotional items/apparel. "The connection between being an actor and a salesman has been noted many times, with good reason," states Wilson, "Both are story-tellers, both share an experience with an audience. Both have a burning desire to communicate clearly."In the performing arts spectrum, Michael has been performing since the 3rd grade, when his music teacher pulled him out of class and asked him to sing Where is Love? From "Oliver!" in the school talent show. Since then, he has performed in over 30 plays and musicals. Some highlighted roles include Tony in "West Side Story," Claude Hooper Bukowski in "Hair," Dickon in "The Secret Garden," Rev. John Hale in "The Crucible," Johnny Guitar in "Johnny Guitar, The Musical," Kippy Sunderstom in "Take Me Out" and Jesus in "Jesus Christ Superstar," here in Asheville. Michael has also done plenty of behind the scenes work on shows, directing or stage managing several productions. His extensive theatre experience aids him greatly in understanding and implementing his marketing abilities in the performing arts arena.

Michael is extremely excited to be on board as the Asheville Arts Center continues to parallel the growth of Asheville itself. Being fairly tech-savvy, Michael's approach promises to be cutting-edge, utilizing social networking, blogging and local business networking to further the Asheville Arts Center's foothold in our community's consciousness. He believes that our community simply needs to walk through the doors and experience the Arts Center and all that they have to offer. Once the threshold has been crossed, people will be hooked.

The Asheville Arts Center is a school based on unlimited opportunities for students of all ages to explore their interests in music, dance and drama. We foster a love and appreciation for the arts through student-teacher relationships, which encourage and help you excel at your dream. We offer high-quality instruction and educational experiences because we are committed to the art of teaching and the teaching of the arts. It is our hope to build art and awareness in the community and provide a "home" for families to pursue their dreams.

Asheville Mural Project - 2009 Update!

Under the Bridge: AMP Poised to Complete the Lexington Gateway Mural - Update on the Asheville Mural Project Summer 09

Arts 2 People's Asheville Mural Project, Lexington Ave Gateway Mural, Summer 2009 - Grant and fundraising news included

Location: Lexington Avenue, under I-240 Overpass
www.ashevillemuralproject.org and www.arts2people.org/amp

The Asheville Mural Project is poised to complete last summer's work on the concrete support piers of the I-240 Bridge downtown. The Lexington Avenue side of the Gateway Mural is estimated to be completed by the end of July, where artists Kurt Thaesler, Steve Lister, and Harper Leich have been working to finish the portion dedicated to the arts in Asheville. Painting is currently well underway, as well as a plan to address the water run-off issue occurring due to the break in the roadway overhead.

AMP will be honored as the recipient of a $5,000 grant from the Chaddick Foundation at the end of June, and hopes to raise interest in the community to match the grant, for a total of $10,000 enabling the collective to complete the mural in it's entirety, both Lexington and Merrimon sides. Donations can be made to AMP c/o Arts2People PO Box 1093 Asheville NC 28802, or by visiting our website www.ashevillemuralproject.org. You may also contact AMP Director, Molly Must, at Molly@arts2people.org

AMP is also the beneficiary of the first four Lexingon Ave Bizarres and truly wishes to thank the organizers! AMP's scaffolding this time has been donated which is great as it is helping keep costs down. The team has hit one minor snag where they have been looking to find a solution for the drainage/ roadway leaking problem which is happening directly above the mural. The leaking is resulting in water pouring off the top of the concrete wall (the canvas) and over the top of the finish mural work. They have spoken with a roofer who hopes to come up with a long term solution to protect the mural.

The Gateway mural has been a collaborative effort amongst several painters in the Asheville Mural Project. So far, for the past three weeks, three painters' have been hard at work, Harper Leich, Kurt Thaesler and Steve Lister on the Lexington Gateway Mural to finish up the West side's north section.

They have been really excited to get started on this side of the mural because their design really focused on the center, where both sections of wall supports come together, but do not touch. They felt that this was where the real potential in the mural design was and so it was a great feeling to get started on the north end and complete the other portrait to start the dialogue between the two images.

The drum circle created by silhouetted drummers also is an element that carries over from one wall the next, and sort of embraces this dialogue... the idea has been hanging out there while AMP has been fundraising and it is great to finally see the core concept taking shape now.

This west side of the Lexington Avenue mural project was tagged with the theme "Asheville's Arts". The general hope is that the life of the mural will summarize the arts and culture of city of Asheville.

AMP will be extending the mural to the Merrimon Avenue side of the bridge, and has gathered a new group of artists to manifest the plan. One section of the design will be a large stylized image of two individuals playing chess in Pritchard Park. One of the players in the mural, Charles O'Kelley, plays chess by the outdoor boards in the park "every day the sun shines" and indeed can be found there at the Haywood and Patton intersection on most summer days, contemplating the chess table he brings from home. Originally reigning from New York, Charles appears playing chess in the movie Searching for Bobby Fisher.

The approach to these two new segments surrounding Merrimon Avenue will be very different from the project's previous traditional techniques. Inspired by Philadelphia's Mural Arts Program (muralarts.org), AMP will be using an off-the-wall method of painting on 5' by 5' sections of a non-woven fiber nick-named "parachute cloth" that will be applied to the wall with an acrylic medium, similar to wall-papering. This method presents numerous advantages, namely the ability for many people to work on the project at once, on the walls of studio, or on tables at a community event, eliminating the extended use of scaffolding. The mural should last longer as well, as the paint will be infused within the fibers and will be safe from peeling.

The Asheville Mural Project (AMP) seeks to build bridges within the community through the fantastic medium of public art. Locals and visitors alike benefit from the experience outdoor art invokes, as it connects them to the creative experience. Creating public art provides a uniquely enriching experience for artists and non-artists alike, and invests participants deeply in their community.

Murals beautify otherwise conventional and often bleak urban architecture, and reflect the unique culture and feeling of an individual place. The Asheville Mural Project aims to enliven our habitat by brightening dark corners, enhancing forgotten space and celebrating the every-day routes we travel. As well as enriching public life, murals memorialize the ideas, concerns, and dreams of a community. Murals are the voice, expression, and vision of a culture.

AMP is becoming a successful and enduring fixture for the area, enriching our environment and providing opportunities for our artists and youth.

The Asheville Mural Project is a branch of the Arts2People 501(c)3 non-profit, an organization devoted to promoting the role of the arts as an integral part of our culture by serving the community through arts outreach, bringing the arts to those in need of the healing power of art, supporting the careers of artists, and through community cultural development. Arts 2 People houses several programs including the Lexington Ave. Arts and Fun Festival (LAAFF), the REACH Programming series, Moving Women, and the Faces of Asheville. Visit www.arts2people.org

Asheville Southern Fried Blues 6/25/09

The Orange Peel Presents Southern Fried Blues Society Showcase & Fundraiser. Also benefitting Reach for the Skye Foundation for Skye Barkschat

Host: SFBS and The Orange Peel

Thu Jun 25 from 7:00 pm to 11:30 pm at Venue: The Orange Peel on Biltmore Avenue

Contact Info: 866-468-7630 or www.theorangepeel.net

It's with great joy and enthusiasm that I announce our First Annual Orange Peel Southern Fried Blues Society Showcase/Fundraiser on Thursday, June 25th. Doors open at 7p and the fantastic performers, 5 of our very own Blues member bands including Peggy Ratusz & Daddy LongLegs, will perform beginning at 8p.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Proceeds will enable us to move forward with our plans for many exciting programs and events in the coming weeks and months. A portion of the proceeds will also go to a foundation called Reach for the Skye benefiting Skye Barkschat who suffered a brain injury from a bicycle accident 2 years ago. Her on-going rehabilitation is costly, therefore the foundation was set up to help offset these medical bills. Skye will be in attendance, and you'll have the chance to meet this charming, wonderful 28 years young woman whose courageous fight has been long, tedious but incredibly rewarding and inspiring. And its due in part, because of people like our Blues Society members who've helped her along the way. Some of the programs and events we're developing that this fundraiser will help launch:

Blues Education - Blues in Schools, in after school programs as well as Summer programs in Asheville and Greenville/Spartanburg.

Youth Blues Musician Workshop - a mentoring program which will allow us to rent space to hold weekend long workshops for musicians, aspiring and otherwise, ages 10-18. Our member bands, along with several well-known established Blues Artists in the region will teach group classes in guitar, bass, drums, voice/performance and piano.

2nd Annual Blues Challenge - Our first annual Blues Challenge sent two bands to the 25th annual International Blues Challenge in Memphis at the beginning of this year, to compete against more then 100 Blues society and youth Blues bands in the world. Winners and runners up both regionally and internationally win spots at various Blues festivals and venues across the country. Member bands compete on a regional level, in front of judges pulled from local industry leaders. A winner is determined and then that band and/or solo duo act advances to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in Feb 2010. For more information visit our affiliate The Blues Foundation at www.blues.org

First annual Southern Pride Blues Festival - We're hoping that with on-going support by your renewed memberships and new memberships, we'll be able to sponsor the area's first Blues Festival in 2010.

So bring a friend and encourage them to sign up for a membership. Visit us on the web for more information www.southernfriedblues.org. www.theorangepeel.net

If any of you have raffle items you'd care to donate to this fundraiser, please email me at this address and I'll make arrangements for pick ups. To our member bands, if you have a CD you can donate to the raffle, please email me here as well.

Playin' it forward, Southern Fried Blues Society, Skip Helms - President, Michael Martin - Vice President, David Harris - Secretary, Lee DeVico - Treasurer & Membership Chair, Billy Hutchings - Marketing Chair, Liz Cyriac - Newsletter Chair, Peggy Ratusz - Events Chair, Sandy Jones - Events Co-Chair, Debra Jones, Web Chair

Save Pop Asheville in 30 days!

Save POPA in 30 Days - Not an event per se... it's a campaign... Please read:
Host: Pop Asheville
Wed Jun 17 at 10:00 am until Wed Jul 15 at 10:00 pm

Venue: Your phone, your computer, your voicebox, Pounding the pavement, turning over stones
Contact email: popasheville@gmail.com

Hi POPAsheville Lovers & Supporters,

Hope you're all well, and the spring/summer weather and your corner of the economy has been kind to you.

Remember how great POPA 2009 was? If not (or if so), watch the sweet 10-min. video, created by Studio South and funded by Advantage West: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whE2PbbmIfA

Aahhhh... good times.

June is the month I usually begin to gear up for POPA band submissions.... but this year things have changed, so I'm writing to give you an update because I know you care (you sweet thing, you) and to see if you are interested in helping me take on a little challenge. I like to call it "Save POPA in 30 Days".

What has changed?

After much consideration, I have decided not to be the Director of POPA for the foreseeable future. This is a bittersweet decision for me, mostly based on the desire for more time with stephaniesid (my band) and my garden and life in general (you mover/shakers know... it's no joke running a big brewhaha!). In any case, it's the right choice.

The good news: I have chosen a competent and creative successor who has agreed to become Director in the event that POPA continues. You may know her: Susanne Hackett, who has been involved with POPAsheville since it was called "IdFest", has the experience of working within and across multiple Asheville organizations and is the founder and owner of Pollinate Consulting, whose mission is aligned beautifully with POPAsheville's. Susanne and Pollinate are prepared to take on POPAsheville with my transitional assistance... again, in the event that POPA continues.

What is keeping POPA from POPping happily into another year?

The bottom line: POPAsheville needs $15,000 in grant or sponsorship in order to continue, and if the festival is to happen again, the funding (or an initial installment) must be in place by July 15. It's a tall order, but if this boost is obtained now, it's likely that POPA will be well on the road to sustainability.

A bit of background: I started POPA as a tiny event to help build up the indie pop/rock scene for my band, stephaniesid. I own POPA as a sole proprietorship but have been working on a volunteer basis. Brick by brick, we've been working toward a sustainable festival that will compensate a Director as well as provide small stipends for staff. And POPA has been doing great! ... covering overhead expenses, paying for itself, and making large, tangible steps toward achieving its mission for the modern music community ... but it still isn't yet able to afford to pay a Director, or provide any compensation for the staff who put it all together.

A paid Director would be able to prioritize POPA in a way I have never been able, by focusing all efforts on POPA from July thru February. Susanne is a great organizer whom I am confident will be able to mobilize sustainable sponsorship and other support for the future of POPA, if we can provide her now with the the means to roll up her sleeves and get to work. How exactly would/will the funding be used?

$12000 - Director position (cover the 600+ hours of required festival work)$3000 - Small staff stipends (stage managers, volunteer director, etc).(All other festival expenses, including pay for bands, venue and LaZoom bus rental, printing, etc. are covered by ticket sales, in-kind sponsors, and smaller-scale sales like t-shirts)

Note: the funding does not need to be in hand by July 15, but we need the first installment, and a guarantee re: when the balance will arrive. I envision only one or two sources; we simply do not have the ability at this point to cobble together a sponsorship drive (that will come in the fall, if the festival happens).

What money sources have you already tried, Steph?

--Cutting costs: We're already down to the bone on this one...

--Sponsorships: I am not a great financial sponsorship-raiser, have not been able to devote the necessary time to it, and the economy is in a tough place, so support from businesses was amazing in 2009, but was almost entirely in-kind as opposed to actual dollars (though very appreciated, don't you forget). We anticipate that a paid Director with the time to devote to this (and stronger skills in that area) would have better results than I have had, and be able to secure funding for the Director position in the future.

--Raising the admission price significantly: I am very wary of doing so; my instincts and a good amount of local research advises against it.

--I have had ongoing discussions with AdvantageWest (http://advantagewest.com - Western NC's economic development commission), who are very supportive of POPA but who have not promised funding. I'm still waiting for their response to my most focused and recent effort. If they commit to the funding by July 15, we'll be in good shape. But their ability to fund is unclear, so I'm casting a wider net here, in hopes that you might use your creative minds (and/or pocketbooks?) to help with the campaign.

What can I do before July 15 if I want to help POPA continue?

1) Know where to find some money for a great festival? Ask that business or person to be our funder! Maybe that person is... YOU? (Note that, although all offers for support are highly appreciated, we're looking for one or two large gifts and/or sponsorships at the moment. Smaller offers, I assure you, will be lusted after and relished in the fall).

2) Please forward this email, call, spread the word.

3) There is no better testimony to the vitality of POPAsheville than the video created at this year's event, funded by the Creative Commerce Coalition of Advantage West! Play the POPA video for people: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whE2PbbmIfA

4) Please feel free to discuss any creative ideas with me. Please do not address these issues with Susanne, as she is not yet engaged as Director, and she has other fish to fry at the moment.

5) If you find a potential funder, please put them in touch with me ASAP. I will be friendly to them and see how we can make the relationship mutually beneficial.

To clarify... In a nutshell, there are two possible scenarios for the future of POPA (I have made peace with either one):

1) the festival will not take place this year (Jan. 2010), and we'll bask in our fond memories, knowing that POPA has brightened Asheville's beacon on the national touring map for indie pop/rock musicians thru sheer awesomeness and countless after-fest gig-swaps, great partnerships, great press, etc. etc. ... Susanne will go on Pollinating Asheville with her great new consulting business, and I'll think about maybe putting on the fest in a future year.

-OR-

2) the fest will receive $15000 (or an ironclad plan for that amount to be delivered) by July 15, 2009, and again fly its banners this January, with Susanne as a paid Director.

Is it the end of the world if POPA doesn't continue, or continue this year?

No. But it is apparent (especially from the flood of emails I have received lately) that there is tremendous desire for POPA to continue, that the ball is rolling wonderfully, that POPA embodies the very nature of the Asheville spirit, and that it is vital as a triumphant beacon for Western North Carolina and its thriving arts scene, so I would like to find a way for it to POP again this January. I realize, however, that "Save POPA in 30 Days" is a big challenge. I know that POPA may not continue, and I'm OK with that. I know a lot of you feel strongly about it continuing, and that's why I'm writing.

I've enjoyed working with all of you during the past several years, and feel blessed with the growth of POPAsheville. I'm confident that things will work out the way they're supposed to, and I trust that you know yourselves and whether or not "Save POPA in 30 Days" has resonance for you... if it does, I'm all ears....

Best to you, and thanks for your time.

Sincerely, Stephanie Morgan

Sante Wine Bar Benefit Tasting 6/18

Not-So-Free/Free Tasting - Bubbles on a Budget to benefit Terpsicorps

Host: Santé Wine Bar, Tomorrow Thursday June 18th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Santé Wine Bar on One Page Avenue
Contact Info: 828-254-8188 or email: info@santewinebar.com

www.SanteWineBar.com

The "Not So Free/Free" Tasting for June benefits Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance as we are huge fans of Heather Maloy and her troupe of dancers. They are currently in rehearsals for their next show, "The Recession Blues," June 25, 26 & 27 at the Diana Wortham Theater. So, in honor of the performance join us Thursday, June 18th for "Bubbles on a Budget".

We're starting a little later to better suit the dancers'exhausting rehearsal schedule so the tasting will start at 6:00, the dancers will show up at Santé just after 7:00 (and maybe even give us a little preview) and we'll wrap it all up by 9:00. So come on out and taste some wonderful bubbles and meet Heather and the dancers of Terpsicorps' "Recession Blues." In case you're not in loop about who Terpsicorps is, they're our very own local professional dance company. Heather, a former dancer herself, is well connected in the dance community and knows that most dancers are not working durning the summer as most seasons run fall to spring. So the little minx decided to invite the creme de la creme of the dance world to Asheville in the summer ("hey kids! Let's put on a show") and has created a magnificent arts organization.

With the state of the economy what it is, the arts are suffering. Someone recently said that professional dance has the potential of becoming extinct. We at Santé, and we the community of Asheville, cannot let this happen. So come on by, drop some life (meaning cold hard cash people) into the tip jar and taste three fantastic and affordable sparkling wines! What more can you ask for - you'll get to imbibe on bodaious bubbles, you'll get to meet at some beautiful people, you'll get to give back to your community and you'll simply have a blast.

We'll see you Thursday. No need to RSVP, just drop in anytime between 6:00 and 9:00, head up to the bar to get your tasting glass, (and we donate) then head to the lounge to get your taste on.

Virtual Veterans March in Washington DC

Asheville... Anyone can attend online.
Virtual March on Washington for Veterans

Stand Up with the DAV for Veterans
Disabled American Veterans
Tue Sep 15 from 9:00 am to 11:00 pm on www.dav.org/VirtualMarch ONLINE ONLY

http://march.dav.org/pages/ContactUs.aspx

**This is an ONLINE event. There is NO need to actually travel to Washington**

On Sept. 15, we will make history with the first-ever virtual march for disabled veterans. And we look forward to you taking part.

You won't need to travel to participate. You won't need to spend any money to have your voice heard. You don't even have to be online the day of the march, so no need to check your calendar. The DAV is working to ensure this will be the easiest and most convenient way ever to stand up for veterans.

With this march, you will support those who came back from war missing a limb, paralyzed, unable to see, terribly sick or otherwise disabled. They put their country – our country – before themselves. They gave so much, and now they need you to stand up for them.

There are many issues facing veterans today. The march will highlight those issues and what needs to be done to better the lives of veterans and their families. Together, we will generate greater public awareness and support for strengthening federal policies that provide health care assistance to disabled veterans injured in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as those from prior eras and conflicts.

Please take a moment to show your support for disabled veterans by joining the march today. Simply check "attending" here, and then head over to http://dav.org/virtualmarch and register. We will never share your information with or sell it to anyone, nor will we use it to solicit donations.

On the day of the march, there will be video messages from veterans, family members, veterans' advocates, lawmakers and a few surprises. There will be opportunities to directly interact with those leading efforts to better the lives of veterans. And there will be easy-to-use tools for you to directly contact your representatives in Washington, D.C. If you cannot visit the site the day of the march, don't worry; it will all remain online.

Lastly, after you sign up, please help encourage others to do the same. Post links on your profile, invite all your friends, do the same your other social networks, send e-mails, blog about it, and tell everyone you know. We need to stand up together as a nation and let our voices be heard loud and in unison.

Those who have put their lives on the line for freedom are depending on you.

Benefit 4 Simon at Curra's Dom Tonight!

A Benefit for Simon
Host: Mark & DeNiece Guest
Today from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm at Curras DOM on 72 Weaverville Rd.
Contact: Infodcguest@mac.com

A group of friends are helping to organize a benefit to cover some of the expenses associated with our our son's hospitalization and illness. As you may know, our son Simon was hospitalized in Birmingham, AL on November 20, 2008 with a large and complicated aortic aneurysm. He was given very long survival odds and continues to slowly improve. We hope to transfer him to Mission/St. Joseph's hospital soon, but until then, we continue to burn up the miles driving to and from Birmingham.

The Benefit for Simon will take place on Tuesday, June 16 from 6-10PM in the new patio at Curras DOM, 72 Weaverville Rd., in North Asheville. It will be a ticketed event that includes dinner (provided by Curras) with music provided by New Orleans' Phil DeGruy (who is making a special trip up from NOLA just for this event), plus many other local and regional musicians. A raffle will also be held during the benefit. If you have an item that you would like to donate for the raffle, we will certainly be grateful. We will be happy to arrange to pick up your donated item. If you'd like to participate in the raffle, please drop us an email, or call our home at 828-253-1661.

Downtown Asheville after 5 on Fri 6/19

Downtown After Five 2009 by the Asheville Downtown Association
Fri Jun 19 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm on North Lexington AT I-240 and Hiawassee, North Lexington

Contact Info: 8282519973 or Email: info@AshevilleDowntown.org

On Friday, June 19, Downtown After Five continues its "entertainment stimulus package" with local band The Cheeksters, electroacoustic bluegrass sensations Brushfire Stankgrass and blues guitar legend Geoff Achison with special guest Randall Bramblett. DTA5 takes place on Lexington Avenue between Hiawassee Street and I-240.

Described as a mix of British pop, glam and R&B, Asheville's own The Cheeksters will start the evening off at 5:15pm. The band is touring in support of their latest album, Movers and Shakers, which critics call "unabashedly groovy."

Also hailing from Asheville, Brushfire Stankgrass will take the stage at 6:20pm. With a knack for making people dance, the band fuses old mountain music with new for a remarkably original sound. Brushfire Stankgrass was recently named in Mountain Xpress's Best of WNC in the folk/old time/bluegrass category.

Headliner Geoff Achison is affectionately known as Australia's Eric Clapton. He performs at 7:45pm with special guest Randall Bramblett joining the Soul Diggers. Achison is known for his jaw dropping guitar virtuoso with rich soulful vocals - no tricks, no pedals, no gadgets - just good gutsy, organic music. Bramblett, a multi-instrumentalist, brings a variety of sounds to the stage. Bramblett has shared the stage with Widespread Panic, Traffic and The Allman Brothers Band amongst countless others.

Proceeds from wristband sales at each Downtown After Five benefit a local charity. June's recipient is Arts2People. The non-profit is devoted to promoting the role of the arts as an integral part of culture.

Other 2009 beneficiaries include Asheville Area Arts Council, Asheville GreenWorks, Downtown Asheville Residential Neighbors (DARN) and Asheville Sister Cities International.

Downtown After Five is committed to continuing reducing its carbon footprint. The concert series features biodegradable food and beverage containers, staffed compost and recycling stations, a solar-powered main stage and a complimentary bike corral. DTA5 sent just 1.5 bags of trash to the landfill after the May event.

Food vendors for the 2009 Downtown After Five Series are The Lobster Trap, Nick's, Anderson Davis Hot Dogs, Ultimate Ice Cream, One World, Rolling Stone Pizza and Sugar Momma's Cookies.

DTA5 features a wide selection of beers including local favorites: French Broad Brewery, Highland Brewing Company, Green Man Ales, Pisgah Brewing Company and Asheville Pizza & Brewing. Regional breweries for this year's events are Magic Hat Brewing Company, SweetWater Brewery, Big Block and Starr Hill Brewery. Attendees will also find national brands Budweiser, Bud Light, Shock Top, Kona, Bass and Guinness.

Downtown After Five is a production of the Asheville Downtown Association, a membership organization committed to being the voice of downtown. For more information, visit www.ashevilledowntown.org.

Mark Farina:

"I look at my job as a modern day traveling minstrel, to bring new music to as many places as I can, and expose obscure records that, otherwise, might go hidden." While Mark Farina may be able to sum up his job description in a sentence, there is much more to be written.

Mark developed his musical tastes in Chicago – listening to house music on the radio, living in one of the country's most primordial breeding grounds for house. Around '88, while record shopping at Imports, Etc., he met Derrick Carter and a friendship began. "I just ended up there between classes, I ended up buying his picks. He steered me toward the cutting edge House producers of the time."

"I started playing when I lived with my parents and didn't have any bills to pay so I could just buy records. My intentions were never to just make money, it's nice, but it's kind of turned into a job by accident - it was a hobby that turned into a job."

Living together and working on tracks together along with Chris Nazuka, they utilized the tight connections between the Detroit and Chicago scenes. Fondly, Mark remembers hanging out listening to Detroit Techno classics - Model 500, Derrick May - eating bologne sandwiches on white bread and drinking Kool-Aid out of a paper cup, prepared by none other than Chef Saunderson himself. In '89, they signed on Kevin Saunderson's KMS Records under the Symbols in Instruments moniker and produced a landmark track called "Mood". "Mood" sold 35,000+ copies in the US and the UK. This record was the first ambient house track ever made and, accordingly, it has taken its position as a classic. The same year, The Face magazine published their year end Top 50 with "Mood" ranking above pop anthems by Dee-Lite and The Pet Shop Boys."

I used to do mixes with Derrick on the radio at Northwestern, we'd make it at the house and listen to it on the lake where they filmed 'Risky Business'. We would drive around and listen 89.3 WNUR; they had a policy, guest DJs didn't have to be students." Eventually, the University changed their policy and only students were allowed to DJ.

When Farina first started wandering from his passion for the purist forms of House into what grew into one of his trademark styles, Mushroom Jazz, he was playing the main room in a club in Chicago and got demoted to the B-room after playing too many Martin Luther King samples. Mark experimented with a deeper style, dropping De La Soul, disco classics and other stuff that wasn't being played in the main room. However, in 1992, Mark found a welcome place for his collection of down tempo tunes accompanied by a small run of mix tapes entitled "Mushroom Jazz."

As the Acid Jazz boom began, he perfected his sound and fused the latest tracks from the West Coast's jazzy, organic producers with the more urban sounds he had championed in Chicago. While the predominant musical force in SF was still dark, dubby House and Wicked-style Breaks, the city embraced the downtempo movement with a healthy bunch of live bands and DJs generating the tunes.

Mark Farina, along with partner, and then manager, Patty Ryan-Smith created, the now legendary weekly club, Mushroom Jazz, in 1992. Every Monday night the crowd slowly germinated – from 100 for the first few months to 600-700 two years later. Simultaneously, the Mushroom Jazz tape series evolved – from the first Chicago run of 50 copies each on to the next stage, where 500 copies of several volumes were easily distributed. As time passed, Farina and Patty put their energies into another project, the first Mushroom Jazz interactive CD-ROM. After a three year run, where the club had established a fanatical, cult-like following for Farina and the Mushroom Jazz sound, the club closed its doors and transformed into a CD series and accompanying tours.

Since 1989, Mark Farina has been traveling the globe performing at literally hundreds of shows a year, sometimes DJing both of his preferred styles in two different rooms at the same party. At other events, he's been known to play extended sets that lasted over eight hours. In his House sets, Mark is known for his uniquely effortless journeys on the jazzy side of Chicago House, mixed up San Fran style, and flawless as always.

This wandering record minstrel has played in front of some fairly amazing backdrops. The ACA-Sound Festival in Acapulco is one example, where the event organizers cleared a huge piece of land and brought in the world's finest DJs. Farina joined Carl Cox, Moby, the Chemical Brothers and LTJ Bukem in the Mexican paradise.

On CD, Mark has recorded both of his dominant musical personalities. His first mix, 'Mushroom Jazz' on Om Records, is defined by a hip-hop sub-groove with jazzy, dubby elements in the down-tempo range. It was followed by 'Seasons', a critically acclaimed House mix. An Imperial Dub mixed CD, a guest slot in the pedigreed 'United DJs of America' series, 'Mushroom Jazz 2' (Om Records) and 'San Francisco Sessions, Vol. I' (Om Records) all followed. 'Mushroom Jazz 3' traces the pattern of the previous releases in the series with a mellow, downbeat groove programmed and mixed as none other but Farina could do. In 2002, Mark has released original productions, as well as another OM mixed CD 'Connect', and recorded what was (at the time) to be the final installment of Mushroom Jazz, 'Mushroom Jazz 4.' Once again, Mark delighted fans when he followed up with another Mushroom Jazz CD, in 2005. For 2006 he launched his new record label, Great Lakes Audio and toured his MOS CD compilation "Sessions". Then in 2007 Mark brought us the next installment in the "House of Om" series, plus another OM mix released in October 2007, titled "Live In Tokyo." Teaming up with the well known club/label, Fabric London, Mark produced a stellar mix, Fabric 40. Then followed up with another much anticipated 'Mushroom Jazz' compilation (Mushroom Jazz 6) on Om Records in October 2008, featuring his original track "Life".

Terra Summer 2009! Ages 11-14

Time is closing in quickly on the beginning of summer and the inaugural session of Terra Summer 2009, a cool experiential program for students ages 11-14 that uses the study, growing, and cooking of food to teach children about science, history, and geography while exploring local and global environmental, economic, and ethical issues related to food.

This year Terra runs from July 20 through August 14 -- one four-week session (shortened from the original dates because we are building a brand new beautiful kitchen lab/classroom and it is a taking a little longer than expected!). In that time we will take field trips, learn about bugs and worms, make pizza in our own bread oven, plant gardens, make art, and run a special mobile produce stand called the Veggie Van. We will also discuss a variety of concepts that are central to the Terra School mission: where our food comes from; who grows it and under what circumstances; the empowerment of the individual to make choices; our responsibility towards the earth, communal resources, and other beings; awareness of other lands and peoples; respect for our bodies through nutrition and exercise; and how food connects us all, in strife and joy. There is a story—and an impact—behind everything we eat, and we should know what it is. The idea is to empower children as human brings, help keep them from falling behind in summer, and affect their character development by connecting them to themselves, others, and the world at large. Everything we do and teach at Terra should foster care, compassion, respect, and a sense of global awareness and responsibility.

If you are a child in grades 6 through 8 who likes to spend time outdoors and in the kitchen, who likes to question things, learn about new things, grow things, and taste new things, check us out at www.terraschool.org, send in an application, and join us this summer. Come make new friends, taste new foods, and look at the world through a new lens!

Terra Summer takes place on a 16-acre working organic farm on Kimzey Road in Mills River, 20 minutes south of Asheville. The program runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday (early drop-off begins at 8:30 a.m.). The cost for the program is $600. SCHOLARSHIPS AND TRANSPORTATION ARE AVAILABLE. Contact Sybil@terraschool.org or call 828-782-7842.

Imagine the first club you ever get into is in the process of changing the face of urban music. Imagine you're only 14 at the time, yet you're already a producer. Well, Croydon dubstep star Benga doesn't have to imagine: that is his life.

Age 14 the afro-haired producer went to his first club, Forward>> at London's now defunct Velvet Rooms, the night widely acknowledged for founding the bassy UK garage hybrid, dubstep.

Having put in years of graft, Benga, now age 21, is a leading light in the rising global dubstep movement alongside the likes of Skream, Kromestar, Rusko, Coki and many more.

For the first time ever, Benga will play in North Carolina and we are very lucky to have that happen here in the cultural and musical hotbed we know as Asheville.

Asheville Home Building & Real Estate Newsletter Intro!

So, Asheville Realtors and Home Builders are finally trying to get hip onto the New Media ways of today. I know how hard it is! It is kinda like when the election campaign started, this whole transition of Social Media just kicked into gear, almost out nowhere. Suddenly newspapers are going out of business, radio listeners went online, and classifieds went to Craigslist. If you want to attempt to learn a little about the change, you should read "The Starfish and The Spider" a few times. It explains a lot of how this new world of communications works. It shows the power of Networking and how networks can destroy the powerful "Spider" organizations much like the ones many of us know or are a part of today.

I am going to have a few tips to show you about Twitter, Blogging, Social Networking, Videos, Photos... and how they can really help you. G Social Media (based in Asheville) also has put a lot of info to help people get started in Social Media on the Asheville Home Builders network site.

Of course, if you wanted someone to set up all of your main Social Media platforms, G Social Media is the way to go. He custom builds all of your sites according to your niche, whether you are a Home Builder, Realtor, Subcontrator or not even in the industry. Any business can profit from making and building relations. If you are looking for Fans, Friends, Followers, Leads, Connections, Suppliers, Clients... G Social is the connection you need!

Twitter Tips from Asheville Building & Real Estate

Everyone is talking about Twitter and how it is the Craze of Today. Some people who do not know much about it downplay the possibilites because it is "new" and different. I can say right now that everyone, including the "little guys" are exploding because they are "taking their chances" and putting these new tools to use.

If you already have a Twitter Account, here are some great Twitter Tips from G Social Media (of course)

1. Reach Out and Connect - Do not just make your account and wait for people to find and follow you. Start following as many people as you can. Everyone is a potential! Get out of that little box you have trapped yourself in. Network!

2. Follow Your Followers - Check daily, and if anyone has followed you, follow them back. Open up and give some reciprocal love!

3. Add a Photo - A Photo of you, your logo, or your organization goes a long way. Adding that personal touch makes connections so much easier.

4. Description - Adding a good description goes a long way. Do not just say something like "Realtor" or "Builder". Add some spice to it like "I am Crazy about Real Estate" or "I am In Love... with Realty". Add your contact info here! Phone number is good. Your website can go on line for your website, and it is a live link.

5. @Replies - Pay attention to these! This is anywhere you Twitter page is mentioned publicly. You will find this on the right column on your Twitter page.

6. Direct Messages - DM's are many times "Thank You for Following me" etc. Once you start gaining ground on Twitter, the DM's will get better. You can also sign up on TweetLater.com to have a direct message automatically sent to your followers.

7. Communicate - What Are You Doing? Sounds simple, but you could say a lot. "Working with a John on some Asheville Real Estate options on the North Side of town". See the keywords I used? Use Them Too! Also mix business with personal and show the human side "Eating a big steak with Carol from Asheville Home Builders".

8. Communicate Some More - Write back to people and ReTweet other good sayings, news, and quotes. This will teach you to be open! You are not the only one with Great Ideas and News. Learn to Network!!!

Social Media extends your reach and exposure by 100's (Are you listening to me???, I SAID 100's) of percentages!!! It is definitely not something to overlook if you plan on staying in the game.

A Beautiful View 6/17 by NC Stage Co.

QUIRKY COMEDY "A BEAUTIFUL VIEW" OPENS AT NORTH CAROLINA STAGE COMPANY JUNE 17 Asheville, NC –

North Carolina Stage Company presents A Beautiful View, by Daniel MacIvor, running June 17 - July 19, 2009 in its off-Broadway style theatre in downtown Asheville. A Beautiful View stars Anne Thibault (simultaneously performing in I Wrote This Play To Make You Love Me at NC Stage) as well as the actor and musician B----, of the indie rock band B---- and Animal. A Beautiful View is directed by Jay Putnam, theatre professor at High Point University and former Artistic Associate at Triad Stage in Greensboro.

A Beautiful View by Daniel MacIvor is a bittersweet comedy about two women who become lifelong friends – and perhaps something more. When L and M first meet in a camping goods store, their tentative friendship seems doomed to fail before it even begins. Each woman has preconceived notions about the other, but rather than hurt each other's feelings, they agree to have a drink together. What follows is a relationship that is as complicated as it is heart-felt, spanning several decades, one marriage, and a two-woman ukulele band.

In an interesting parallel to the play, the actresses starring in A Beautiful View are actually longtime friends.
Anne Thibault and B---- (who also performs under the name Capital B) met their first year in college and have kept in touch as they each established careers in the performing arts. In casting the play, Producing Director Angie Flynn-McIver took into account both actresses' extensive experience, but also the unique chemistry that develops between life-long friends.

Anne Thibault also wrote and stars in I Wrote This Play To Make You Love Me and has appeared at NC Stage in Loot, The Syringa Tree, and Proof. In addition to her regional theatre work, Thibault has toured with Arts Power and the National Shakespeare Company. She is the Associate Artistic Director of Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre in Alaska.

Capital B has a BFA in acting from DePaul University, but is better known as half of the ground-breaking musical duo B---- and Animal, which has toured with Ani DiFranco, the Indigo Girls, and Michelle Shocked among others.

NC Stage is offering "choose your own ticket pricing" with price points from $15 to $30 for both plays. Now in its 7th season in downtown Asheville, NC Stage has been experimenting with its price structure in direct response to the current recession. The concept of "choose your own ticket pricing" is an expansion of the theatre's longstanding "Pay What You Can Night," in which patrons pay $6 minimum for a ticket. With "choose your own ticket price," patrons can choose a ticket price within their means: tickets range from $15 - $30, with price points rising in three-dollar increments.

In theatre language, a repertory schedule means more than one play performing during the same time period – in this case, performing on alternating days of the week. For a full calendar of performance dates and times, visit www.ncstage.org.

North Carolina Stage Company is Asheville's professional theatre, named WNC's Best Local Stage Company for three years in a row by readers of the Mountain Xpress. NC Stage performs in its 99-seat theatre in the heart of downtown Asheville.

Tickets and show times: Tickets are $15 - $30, and patrons may choose their own ticket price for every performance. Call (828) 239-0263 or visit www.ncstage.org for tickets. Like Mother and I Wrote This Play… run in repertory May 26 – June 13. Like Mother closes June 13, and is replaced by A Beautiful View, which will run with I Wrote This Play… June 17- July 19. Performance schedule varies by week. Show times are 7:30pm for evening shows, and 2:00pm for matinees. For the full rep schedule, visit www.ncstage.org.

Location: North Carolina Stage Company performs in a 99-seat theatre in downtown Asheville, entrance is at 15 Stage Lane, off of Walnut St. one block off Haywood St., next to the Rankin Ave. parking garage.

Sponsors: North Carolina Stage Company is grateful for the support of season sponsors The Colorful Palate, Greenlife Grocery, Imaging Technologies, Treadshots Photography, and the North Carolina Arts Council. Our ticket sponsor is The Chocolate Fetish, and concessions are provided by Izzy's Coffee Den and Sugar Momma's Cookies.
