Closed: Recycling Drop Off Center Behind Earth Fare West

If you’ve been using the recycling drop-off center behind Earth Fare West, then recycling just got more difficult! The dumpsters are gone, replaced with a sign apologizing for the inconvenience and suggesting alternate sites:

• Curbside Management – 116 North Woodfin Ave. – Always Open
  
  
• Curbside Management (Asheville Pizza & Brewing Company) – 675 Merrimon Ave. – Always Open
  
  
• Buncombe County Landfill – 85 Panther Branch Rd. – Mon. through Fri. 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and Sat. 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.
  
  
• Buncombe County Transfer Station – 190 Hominy Creek Rd. – Mon. through Fri. 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and Sat. 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

If you live in west Asheville, and your working hours permit, the closest option is the Transfer Station. If you live in east or south Asheville, or if your working hours don’t coincide with the Transfer Station’s hours, your only option is to travel further or take time off of work. Traveling further (presumably driving) isn’t Eco-friendly and one wonders if that extra driving distance negates the environmental pluses of recycling. Taking time off of work … well, not many employers would appreciate that.

Hope is not lost! According to Wendy Simmons, Solid Waste Manager, the Public Works Department has “just begun a waste stream reduction program to evaluate the solid waste and recycling needs for our community at this time and into the future.” She further states that they are continually working to improve their recycling program and our feedback is important to that process.

So, here’s what we can do:

• Contact Ms. Simmons and let her know what your recycling needs are (her contact information can be found HERE).
  
  
• If you live in an apartment community, ask the management to consider setting up a recycling program for your complex (Ms. Simmons told me that she’d be happy to work with them to investigate options).

Recycling is important … to Asheville and to the environment. Let the city know that you want to participate.

BLAINESWORLD Asheville - some clips from his great email newsletter

Cynthia, my beautiful bride and I, are sooooo glad we moved to Asheville because of the weather . . . we're still laughing over the remembrance that when we moved, we were told we'd never have to worry about snow . . . it just never happens . . . WRONG!

The real problem seems to be that while they have snow plows here, they don't have very many of them . . . also, because of the mountains, when there is bad weather, everything closes down--often for days.

Though overall the weather is still a bit milder in both the winter and summer (than in the Pennsylvania/New Jersey area), we still wouldn’t mind less of the harsh winter.

However, it has enabled us to see the beauty of the area when it is snow-covered . . . this is particularly noticeable when walking down to the lake that surrounds our community.

In addition, the weather surprisingly has enabled us to get caught up on some of our dining-out adventures . . . when you can't get out for several days, you find yourself anxious to get to any place that's open . . . so we've recently revisited these eateries:

* Pomodoros has always been one of our favorites . . . they, like many other restaurants in the area, will go out of the way to work with Cynthia to accommodate her current dietary restrictions (no wheat, no sugar, no dairy) . . . she recently enjoyed an order of lamb chops, and I liked my chicken marsala . . . salads for both of us were excellent and so was the attention we received from Lisa, our server . . . for more information, please click:

Hannah, our server, wanted to make sure everything was just right . . .  so when she couldn't answer Cynthia's questions, she brought her manager Allison to the table . . . . the meal was just perfect as a result . . . Pizza & Ice Cream benefit for the Asheville City Schools Foundation on January 14, 2011

On January 14th 2011, GalloLea Pizza and The Hop are coming together to benefit the Asheville City Schools Foundation from 5pm - 7pm. 


GalloLea provides healthy and gluten free pizza kits that you can purchase at several locations in the Asheville area. The Hop is a great local ice cream shop and has 2 locations; one on Merrimon Ave in North AVL and the other one on Haywood Rd in West AVL. 

The Asheville City Schools Foundation (ACSF) is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to the educational success of all Asheville City Schools students. The Foundation works to engage and mobilize the community to support teachers, students, and their families.

Only WNC Priestess Process Circle in 2011 may be previewed Wednesday

Beloved Shamanic Priestess Process creatrix and author Anyaa McAndrew announces an extended writing sabbatical from facilitation of her internationally known women's circles,  and opens registration for her only 2011 circle with a free Asheville event. 

The preview evening, "Awakening the Divine Feminine Within," is hosted by McAndrew's co-facilitator, Shari Starrfire,  of Harmonic Balance Transformations, on Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m. at the Women's Wellness and Education Center, 24 Arlington Street.

"The evening will feature dance, journeying, and sharing of what it means to activate and accellerate consciousness as women in the time of the Great Shift," says Starrfire. "It's a shift many of us are experiencing personally and collectively."
