Council on Aging of Buncombe Needs our Help

Hello Asheville!
Here is a call to action for a great opportunity to help our local senior citizens in need and help yourself to some incredible deals. If you haven't heard yet, there is a fund-raising event happening through Saturday at the Aqua Environmental Resource Center; affectionately known as The AERC (arc) of Asheville.

This is a two part fundraiser. For starters a silent auction of high quality fixtures, 24 items totaling over $8500 in value received from the unfortunate closing of a showroom in Raleigh. The silent auction provides bidders the chance to get an unbeatable deal. Secondly a Donate To Participate ticketed drawing for over $2500 worth of products, gift certificates, and more. A $5 donation will get you one ticket while $20 gets 5 tickets. Item for the drawing include H2oEasy water filtration system, a $200 gift certificate, 2ea $100 gift certificates, free tickets to this weekends Home Show at the Civic Center, CD & 2 tickets to the Skinny Legs And All CD release party in April t the Grey Eagle, Dual-Flush Pro toilet conversion kits and much more. This is a wonderful opportunity to support the COABC Home Repairs Program. As an incentive to stop in The AERC is providing FREE home water efficiency kits while supplies last.

Located at 46 New Leicester Hwy in Asheville. Just of Patten Ave turn left at the Moose Lodge sign (Moose Heart Lane) and you are there. At the very least you will have fun playing in the hands on demonstration showroom and leave with some valuable incites about water conservation & water quality. They even have a toilet MaP (maximum performance) test station so you can see for yourself how well a toilet will perform.

In the Spirit of Giving: Asheville Yogis Reach Out

I just love how this time of year brings out the best in people. Sure, it can be said that the opposite is true, especially if you happen to venture anywhere near the malls and shopping areas (which is why I tend to avoid Tunnel Road like the plague this time of year) of town. Frantic shopping and traffic aside, this is the season when community building resources and organizations really shine with churches, charities, schools and individuals reaching out and lending a helping hand to those who need it.

One of the first things I noticed when I moved to Asheville over 7 years ago was the strong sense of community within the business and social networks. I have noticed a collective desire to see Asheville and all of its inhabitants thrive and be well and also so many passionate people out there every day making a difference.

The rich community of yoga teachers and studios in Asheville is no exception. In addition to many other business in town, yoga networks are reaching out to the community with events to raise awareness and support for those less fortunate this holiday season.

Yoga classes, with their deep breathing and conscious relaxation exercises, are a great way to reduce stress during the holidays. So, why not get to class and contribute to a good cause at the same time? Sounds like a win-win to me!

SOUTH ASHEVILLE YOGA

• Help the Hungry, Yoga Without Borders: Ongoing through Dec 31st, 2009 Half of all the money taken in at the studio in December will go towards helping to feed the hungry. Click for more info

• OM for the Holidays Gift/Fund Drive: Ongoing through Dec 15th, 2009 West Asheville Yoga's 3rd annual toy/gift/fund drive to support foster children for Christmas. Click for more info
  
• GAYA Food/Coat Drive: Sunday Dec 13th, 2009 10:00am-12:00pm Join members of the Greater Asheville Yoga Association in raising food and coat donations. Click for more info
  

ONE CENTER YOGA

• Holiday Restoratives: Yoga and Yoga Nidra Workshops with Kaoverii Weber: Fridays Dec 10th and 17th, 2009 6:00pm–8:00pm Cost: by donation ($5–25 suggested). Proceeds benefit Manna Food Bank. You may also bring a non-perishable food item. Click for more info
• Holiday Yoga Prop Swap: Friday Dec 18th, 2009 4:30pm–6:30pm Bring yoga-related items in good to excellent condition to swap with others in the spirit of sharing. Click for more info
  

Other yoga studios in town have already had fund-raising events. For example, ASHEVILLE YOGA CENTER had their "Burn the Turkey" benefit and food drive on November 28th which was a huge success! If you know of any events that I haven't listed, please post the information below.

Seeing people helping other people really warms me up from the inside. Who needs hot chocolate when you have such a warm community of folks here in Asheville, right?

Story Hour with Moscow Ballet Soloist SvetlanaTodinova

The Western North Carolina AIDS Project (WNCAP) is honored to be partnering with the Moscow Ballet for a very special fundraiser opportunity. WNCAP is selling fundraiser tickets to The Great Russian Nutcracker scheduled for December 22, at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium at the Asheville Civic Center. To help promote this special event, Moscow Ballet Soloist Svetlana Todinova is coming to Asheville this weekend, October 31.

Svetlana will be participating in a special story hour at Barnes & Noble in the Asheville Mall at 2:00, and later that day she will be attending WNCAP’s Raise Your Hand Auction at the Deerpark Restaurant on Biltmore Estate. So if you have children and are looking for something to do before the trick-or-treating begins, head to Asheville Mall and meet Svetlana at Barnes & Noble, if you’re not trick-or-treating, we hope to see you at the Raise Your Hand auction.

For the Love of Art and Derby

Calling all artists! Asheville's all-female flat track roller derby team is gearing up for the 2009 Season! The Blue Ridge Rollergirls are putting together an art auction to benefit the league and we need your help! We are in need of donors of any type of art to contribute to this event, which will be at the end of March. The items will be auctioned off and proceeds will be used to put on a kick-ass season at the Asheville Civic Center filled with roller derby action! Salvation Army at the Asheville Mall

This lady was wondering "why is this guy filming me?" and then we talked, got some clips, etc. The Salvation Army is everywhere, and I have met a lot of great people donating their time to collect funds to help during the Season.
